Topic: Solo and Scales

Hi guys, just wondered if there were any basic tips for trying to come up with my own solo?

I keep mentioning pentatonic scales so sorry if i sound like a stuck record, but ive been playing about with it and moving right down the fret board like on the 12 fret onwards and playing and it sounds ok. Id love to be able to play even a small solo to get me going.

Also are there other kind of sclaes i can research and learn?

Thanks

If you always put limit on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them...

Re: Solo and Scales

You can do loads with the pentatonic scale so you want to try and learn the scale all across the fretboard.

Try and work out the intro to "Layla" there is a cool backing track for that one to play along to!

You should also try to learn the major and minor scales as well which will give you more notes to add to your pentatonic licks.

If I was to do it all over again I would learn the classic pentatonic pattern that it sounds like you are working on, then I would learn the pattern above and below this and try and make solos moving between all three. Then slowly introduce the others and you will then have the whole fretboard covered.

All other scales really add one or two notes to the pentatonic scale or change one or two notes so this understanding of this scale will help you master them all eventually!

Re: Solo and Scales

Thanks Olly, can you give me the name of the scales you mentioned or point me towards a link on the internet that will help to learn them? Thanks

Re: Solo and Scales

Sure -
Learn all these positions of the pentatonic first

I assume you have been learning what is shown as position 2 on this site?

if so then work on position 3 which, as it would suggest, is the next one up - try and slide between the two positions and see what you can come up with!

Then learn position 1 and work between the three

Position 5 is also good as the root note is on the 5th string. So for example, if you play position 2 on the 12th fret, try starting position 5 on the 5th fret of the 5th string. It will help "unlock" the fretboard

Then you if you want to:

Look at position 2 here and compare it to position 2 of the pentatonic. All the notes are there of the pentatonic there is just a couple more added! So you can and and remove as you see fit!
