Topic: AMP AMPS AMPs arrrrrrr AMPS

I have been looking for what seems like an age. I have tried every amp on the planet. I still have no idea.

I have about a £1000 English pounds.

I am not against modeling, I have a peavey vypye 75 solid state modeling amp however, i would like something with valves. It could be a hybrid modeling amp.

Let me know your thoughts on your amp, even if you guest sign up and help put me out of my misery.

I mainly play classic rock with a Gibson SG and Home build Telecaster.

Re: AMP AMPS AMPs arrrrrrr AMPS

Sorry I've only used Spider IV's - so can't help.

Have you tried any marshall ones - seems to be a classic paring with the Tele's?

Re: AMP AMPS AMPs arrrrrrr AMPS

Yes played nearly every modern Marshall known to man. I like the 1974 hardwired Blues breaker, but its £1200.

You can build your own for £275, that puts me off.

I like the Marshall JMD1 but its a model amp, and its twice as much as comparable amps.

I like the Blakestar HT 20 for its features, but it sounds a bit too mettle for me.

I like the Vox AC30 but feel like they are trying to lift you leg as they are that many variation of the AC30, ranging from £500-£1400. (Take about trying to use a classic name of an amp for marketing).

I  like the Fender Deluxe VM but it needs to be loud to sound good and 40 watts is far to loud for the wife.

I like the Laney Lion Hart, but its dear for what it is.

I don't like the sound of Orange.

I like the Valve King but again to sound good it has to be loud, and if the wife won't live with 40 watts, she would remove parts of my anatomy at 100 watts.

The peavey Classic 30 is just to muffy in sound.

I could live with an Vox AC 15 but have read that the valve get that hot the bend and sometimes snap the printed circuit board.

I need something around 20 watts that gives you the Fender Delux gain sound, which in my opinion is simailar to the Vox drive sound. (I await a bashing on that). But I know what I mean.

Re: AMP AMPS AMPs arrrrrrr AMPS

Eek!

I know someone with a Vox AC15, who thinks its wonderful, and as far as I know hasn't had any problems with it.

Out of interest why didn't you like the orange one? I'd been looking at them (hadn't tried one) just want something smaller than the 30w Spider IV hulking in the corner of my lounge....

Re: AMP AMPS AMPs arrrrrrr AMPS

So me Dad has just phoned, asked me what I want for Xmas.

I said a "Vox AC30 hand wired £1200 worth".

He has heart failure then says "whats that".

I say "a all valve powered amp"

he says "tell me more about these valves".

I say "they power the signal form the guitar".

He Says "bye I will ring you back".

I think, tight twat.

He rings back and tells me that those valves many years ago powered every thing from TVs to Radios, to Fruit machines. Then he says bye.

Then he rings again and says cheack your E-mail

Now would be a good time to tell you that he lives on the Isle of White, and owns a company that let out vending machines and fruit machines which often he has to go out and repair. I know he has had various companies doing this for as far back as I can remember. He also supplies and fits industrial kitchens as well as flying a plain that tows gliders at weekends. Although his piolets license is short lived now, down to his age.

He had e-mailed me this,

http://s10.postimage.org/mqln6dazp/AC30_Old.jpg

With the message, "is this what you are looking for".

I ring him back and say "yer sure is, what the f*** is it". At this point i think the old twats gone Parkinson's on me.

He says it a "tag board schematic for a Vox AC 30 and i can build that in my sleep".

I say "well get yourself to bed".

So the upshot is that he is gonna build one for me and send it up in the post the only down side is he said it will be just after Xmas cause he his snowed under with work.

O another down side the wife knows I have grand saved for an amp.

I can kiss goodbye to that.

Re: AMP AMPS AMPs arrrrrrr AMPS

That is pretty cool James. So basically you are getting a custom made Vox AC30 with original spec for pretty much nothing?

Re: AMP AMPS AMPs arrrrrrr AMPS

Yer its great, just trying to hide the grand from the wife. default/big_smile

Rest assured I will fail.

Re: AMP AMPS AMPs arrrrrrr AMPS

Try the Vox NT50 head and matching cab. Its all valve with an EL34 power stage for Marshall type crunch. Nice Vox clean tones too. The Cab comes with Greenback Celestions 12" x 2 and looks pretty retro.

Re: AMP AMPS AMPs arrrrrrr AMPS

You should try Rollin Guitar amps. I have the ROL-15

6 1/2" speaker
- Volume and Gain control
- Treble, middle and bass controls
- Headphone jack
- Frequency Range: 90-8KHz
- Input Impedance: 220k Ohms
- Dimensions: 305x215x40mm

of course they have more amps if your looking for more power. I bought mine on some EBay Store

Rollin Guitar amps have never failed me. It was exactly what I was looking for.  default/big_smile

Thanks Tomar and welcome to the forum.

Your suggestion is appreciated and I have never heard of Rollin which goes to show again all the best stuff is in the USA.

However you thoughts have come a bit late.  I have just got a blackstar ht20 and I am over the moon with it.

Re: AMP AMPS AMPs arrrrrrr AMPS

Try and find a Pignose G40V - 2x6L6 3x12AX7 40w  - wired the same as the early Marshalls ie a Bassman with a master volume. Gives a wonderful warm tone and is LOUD and lightweight!
