i have no knowledge of guitar yet. though i see lots of people playing with it. what are the tips you can give to first time or beginner in learning guitar.
what are the first things i must learn or do. should i focus on memorizing chords. should i focus on finger position.
how should i lern it by myself. should i read books or should i watch some video tutorials. thanks.
You have to learn of all of these things but take it slow and steady and enjoy your playing.
I would suggest you work on chords to start, then introduce some scales and only use finger excerises to warm up. Once you can do all this then get yourself a couple of decent theory books - I would reccoment Rock Lead Basics, Rock Lead Techniques and Rock Lead Performance - these are really enjoyable.

At the beginning you have to learn some chord.... get some easy ones THE MAJOR CHORD at first, then you'll learn some MINOR CHORD...
The important is to get the finger at the right position, make sure that is sound right when when you strum all the strings... Practice brain and finger muscle by switch from one chord to another one and getting the finger at the right place...
Then you have to learn some strumming pattern and get some rythm !!
With major and minor (and 7th) chord, you'll be amaze how many song you will play !!
Some books are good, but some are WAY too beginner, I suppose you don't want to learn, Mary as a little lamb !! 
Books and DVD are'nt the best way, from my point of view. A DVD won't show you the mistake that you make, and bad habits are hard to correct later. A teacher or a friend could show you the way to do it right !!
Take it easy at the beginning... don't play for too long period of time, but play OFTEN.... short period...

I started learning guitar 4 months ago and a friend of mine showed me how to play White Stripes - Seven Nation Army and i found this helpful cause when i would mess up or almost give up on learning chords or scales i just played this simple tune then i would go back to doing chords or scales etc.
just think it can get boring learning the same thing over and over i like to mix it up about on my learning so i dont get bored as easy.
