Chords

Ive just been watching a video on you tube but ive also heard this before and im really struggling. A guitarist will pick up his guitar and put one finger on one string in a fret and call it a D. I only know the chord D or a barre chord. How or where can i learn this?

I learnt a basic pentatonic scale on A chord and just wondered how easy it would be to create a mini solo from this? I have started going through the scale and move up and down the strings and add a little bending etc. Any ideas?
