Id say they are both flawed and over-rated. Buy a used PRS Custom 24/22 instead. Hardtail, if you want the Angus thing. You'll never need another guitar! default/smile

Right guys I am about to take the plunge into a expensive guitar I had settled on a Gibson SG Standard. I love the sound which comes from years of listen to ACDC, (ALL BOW YOUR HEADS TO GODS).

However, this is the problem as my playing as come along I have began to develop my own style and with help of my new modelling Amp hopefully a sound.

I am worried that buying the SG is just paying homage to Angus, (ALL BOW YOUR HEADS TO A GOD), and I am gonna fall out with the guitar as it is not my style and i am just playing what as pleased my ears for soooooo long.

Yet the SG has a very distinctive sound and do love the aggressive shape and the good feeling a suspect would come from owning a Gibson.

Now problem, my mate has an assortment of Fender Jags and Jazzmasters 21 now in total. This guitar shape have got to be the most comfortable I have ever played. There is plenty of support round around your front and this makes getting around the Guitar allot easer, which aids my playing and gives me more confidence, especially with my gamy left hand.

Now the real problem, I was looking at fenders web site when this appeared and I just went "THATS FLIPPING NICE I WANT". This was an instant reaction.

Its a Mustang pawn shop.

From what I can gather its half Jag (front of the body) and half Strat (back of the body)

Thoughts would be appreciated before I take the plunge.

Are there any real differences between the craftsmanship of Fender in regard to Gibson.

I have test both the Gibson Sg and Jag but not the mustang.

Just a couple of times when I was starting out with a cheap electric guitar. If PRS were chucking me free signature models every month, that might change. I wont hold my breath.

PS: I got nothing against anyone trying to make a living, but there has to be substance, and this page had none.  I hope for your sake if you have something novel and arent saying "Start teaching to others online" and other brilliant tidbits along those lines, that you develop your presentation.

There's a lot of routine stuff but check it out for his section on vibrato. Well worth a watch as many guitar players dont give it the attention it deserves. Me for example.

Vai admits to being not that quick anymore. Something to do with a mediacl problem he had a few years ago. How about Greg Koch? Some of his country stuff is amazing. Funny too ....

Lord Denning, GREAT Law Lord, unfortunately he is dead.

In a word, no. The idea sounds great but as soon as I hold a knackered looking Fender Custom Shop Strat in my hands with a 3 grand price tag I ponder the existence of such a thing or why anyone would buy it.

Id much rather relic a guitar myself by playing the hell out of it. I think they appeal to people who see guitars as collectibles or objects of desire rather than an instrument to study, learn and play with others.

A bit sad IMHO.

Does any one see the point in buying a pre-relic guitar?

Are you buying a false image or does it make you believe its a true relic.

Thanks for the link. As a new guitar teacher Ill check it out

I have a six year old lad who comes to me for half hour lessons. I show him chords using the top 4 strings only (he's left handed and parents cant find a 3/4 size guitar in lefty) and we do some songs which he seems to enjoy. I just feel Id like to at least start progressing him on more interesting things but lacking ideas.

Only tip I would offer is to make sure you can see plenty of the second knuckle on your left hand (nearest the finger tip). This hopefully means that the inside fleshy part of your fingers aren't touching the string below and that only the finger tip is pushing down on the string. Its a mistake alot of my students make to begin with. Keep it up!  default/smile

Whats the difference between economy and alternate picking?

stuartbahn wrote:

You should also try economy picking, it is far faster than alternate picking and relatively easy to do.

Hendrix was undoubtedly one of a kind with his approach and tone on the lectric guitar but equally he was capable of producing some pretty awful sounds as well. Ive got a live record of his which sounds like a 5 year old banging on a banjo. I guess it was a case of drugs ruining his talent but for the times he burned brightly he was truly amazing.

nursehk wrote:

Jimmi Hendrix for me as well is the fastest guitarist I have ever seen and not only that he is not just fast but his playing fo the guitar is the best as well.

I think I saw them supporting ZZ Top at Milton Keynes about 15 years ago. Denim clad rockers is all that I can vaguely remember. Nice to see bands that you are nostalgic about though.

Olly wrote:

ok, well unfortunately I think I will be the only one on this board that is excited by this news but the band Thunder who I have been harping on about for ages are reforming for a one off gig at the High Voltage festival in July and I have tickets woohoo.

I thought that discovering Thunder after they split meant there was no hope of seeing them live and then I find out this.

I have never really been to a festival before. I am going on the one day that Thunder are playing but also Dream Theater are playing this day. I don't know any of their music but I have heard they are good.

Unfortuantely it does require a trek to London which I don't like the idea of but needs must!

Blackstgar HT-1R is ace for low volume shredding or blues overdrive. Not much in the clean stakes unless by clean you want overdrive...

Olly wrote:

I love my Marhshall Valve amp but you have to crank it so loud before you get the desired tone it makes it impractical for home use.

So I am looking for the next nearest thing that produces decent tone and sustain at lower volumes.

Currently I am using a Marshall Valvestate amp which I believe only has a valve in the preamp. It is the best alternative I have found but I am not 100% happy with it. I am sure there are better out there but I have limited amplifier experience.

So what amps are you using and how do they perform at lower volumes? I am not talking about being able to play them whilst your kids/partner/parents are asleep in the next room but just not ear blisteringly loud!

My guitar, mentioned above broke a top E string on day 2 so I rang up the guitar shop to complain! I thought strings were some sort of permanent fixture that lasted forever.

I dont think I discovered the concept of a setup for at least another 10 years.

Absolutely no idea!

Mine was just too cheap and went out of tune all the time and was in need of a good set up!

But the best things was it was an electric guitar, I was about 11 and it was totally the coolest thing to have!

Best: 2 cool looking cream humbuckers, although I didnt have a clue what they did  default/smile

Worst: part of the black finish was missing on one of the horns. This showed that the body was clearly made of chip board! LOL

Ive just discovered (sort of) Gypsy Jazz a la Django. I Romany mate of mine who plays wicked Gypsy rythm guitar has opened my eyes to this amazing music form. I sit and watch his strumming hand and it drives me nuts that I cant play it yet!

Olly wrote:

After a long few months of listening to the whole of Thunder's music catalogue I'm starting to feel the need to find something fresh.

So what are you guys into at the moment?

I'm into quite a lot of rock styles but it cannot have vocals that scream or road so much you cannot hear what they are saying and also the band needs to utilise guitar solos!

Any recommendations?

Not sure as Im not great at writing either but a lot of my favourite songs start with a false beginning, "Under The Bridge" for example. They take the listener down one route and then pull a quick left and go  somewhere else.

Olly wrote:

This is where I struggle.

I know I have the ability to write music but I struggle with where to start.

How doy ou begin your music?

I also seem to suffer from not being able to enjoy music until it becomes familiar to me, so it means I struggle badly with wrting. I may be playing something I would really grow to appreciate but then too quick to pass it off as it's unfamiliar.

Am I alone on this one?
