Bass amps and blowing mine up

Post by Gavin »

I have a Marshall amp that i bought a few years ago for a guitar i bought.I now have a bass, and from what i have read, the opinion is divided as to whether i can play my bass through this amp without blowing it up.Now bear in mind i am learning so i dont want to embarress myself by having it too loud.Too be honest, i am baffled by bass amps, but would it be ok to continue playing through the amp i have without worrying about breaking it?

keep the volume down...if the speakers start waffling turn it down some more (either the bass eq or the
vol )
just use your common sense with any amplifier

an amp designed for bass would be required for gigging though
because of the low frequencies and power levels required

Thanks for the reply.Sometimes, you read some stuff on other sites, and it can get quite condescending between guitarists and Bass players, so you don`t always get a sensible straight answer. At least i can still use the amp i have.Perhaps i will sell it and use the money to buy a bass amp.

A buddy of mine blew his speaker to pieces playing a bass through a guitar amp, but he cranked it up. Would suggest getting a guitar amp because you are missing some of the higher notes a guitar is ment to scream!!

you can play a bass through any amp as long as you play
within the spec of the speaker ( pwr handling/freq response )

cranking a bass ( or guitar/flute/triangle/mouth organ ..you name it) beyond the tolerance of any speaker is asking for the inevitable
...a speaker with no cone in it...or at best a damaged suspension so it rattles and farts
to f**k rendering it useless
