Eric Johnson

Post by olly »

Eric Johnson really is a fantastic guitar player. For those of you who have not seen him play, check out youtube and search for "cliffs of Dover", "SRV" and "A Song for Life".

"A Song For Life" is actually the song I am learning to play at the moment on my new acoustic. It really sounds great and if I could play it half as well as Mr Johnson I would be very pleased. He does seem to get every note perfect.

The only negative with Eric Johnson is he has zero stage presence which when he has done with with Satch and Vai during 3G, it kind of doesn't really work so well. But hats off the guy. He can really play guitar!

He is a very talented musican. I've never seen him live, but he makes to Japan I'd like to see him

his fingers do fly on the fretboard

No I have never seen him live either but respect to the man. The most recent DVD I saw contained an interview with him where he has said he is no longer going to try and play note perfectly in favour of more stage presence. To be honest his guitar work seemed to suffer for this and the stage presence seemed very forced.

I think it is one of those things where he knows his weakness is his stage presence and maybe he feels awkward about it himself. but we can all be perfect at everything so he should stick to what he does best!

I've seen EJ live three times. The first time I didn't really know what he was all about. A friend of mine suggested going, so I went. Best move I ever made. Blew me away and changed the way I looked at guitar. No stage presence? Who cares... the best guitarist to ever walk the planet in my opinion. He can play anybody's style, yet nobody can touch his... If you have a chance to see him live, definitely should.

Hi PlayGuitar and welcome to the forum.

You are certainly lucky to have seen him live and you are absolutely correct - I have never heard anyone sound like EJ at all.

Manhattan is a great song. I did start trying to learn it but didn't get too far!

Guitar pro is certainly good for learning stuff, especially if the tab is accurate. Makes life so much easier being able to hear, and slow down what you are trying to learn!

Iain - you should do a cover recording of you playing it!
