Would you???????????????????

Post by jamesd74 »

So since I have my new Wilkinson pickups in my Samick I phoned up Trev Wilkinson just to say thanks for his advice (which was bob on).

Now trust me when I say my Gibson humbukers sound dull in comparison, (which I found that hard to believe I had to phone my mate up to come down and 5 mins with each guitar in the blackstar, same settings he had no choice but to agree)

So I mentioned to Trev about putting them in my Gibson SG.

He said something which as just made me think a little bit about high end guitars, parts. What he said is something which was touched on in a way on another topic a few weeks ago.

"Just because it has a branded high end name on it, it doesn't mean there good its the player that thinks there good"

He has advised some cap changes and 500k cts pots along with his paf take humbukers and a 50 wiring setup. He has offered me the humbukers at a reduced price £70 the pair.

So would you swap out the gibbos.

Hi James, this is an interesting one, but I have to say the Wilkinson all the way in my humble opinion, :/
The actual tone's are about the same, but the Wilkinson is streets ahead on clarity, seems to separate the strings better, very nice pick up,
But that said, I'm a bit of a purist, I buy Fender because I love the feel and sound, it sort of seems pointless to buy an expensive guitar then change bits on it, I bet you bought your Gibbo because you liked the sound (Angus)!!!! So the question you have to ask yourself is, if I swap the p/ups will it still sound like a Gibson?

Just to clear you think the Wilkinsons are better?????

Regards sound...............Yes the SG was bought as total homage to Angus......... However I have thought this point though...........and maybe my sound is starting to want come out a bit more then Angus's.

But do you stray far from your roots and mine are firmly in ACDC..

Does changing the pickups make it my SG rather then Angus's?????

And finaly regarding Purest I am fully with you.........it is a touth one.

One posibilty......Remove the gibson wiring Harness and Humbukers in 2, Replace with new pots and jack and switch then fit new pickups. Its all there to go back in if needed....

AMEN TO THAT

If it was not for Angus I would be listing to the carpenters.

Oh dear what has come over me.

Arghh! Sorry I preferred the first, thought it had more of deeper sound, but as you know I'm very attached to my ESP, which is probably why I preferred that...

Very interesting comparison though..

I personally think in this situation I prefer the second.

But would that apply to every amp at every setting with every volume - that I am not so sure.

cant get the second one to play....i think the internet is throwing a wobbly ( sun spots to boot )
but as far as i am concerned sounds are different..not better or worse
i cant imagine george formby playing standing by the lamp post with an sg and a whammy bar
it just wouldn't be the same as that f***** banjo...same as you wouln't get angus getting any sense
out of a 5 string banjo ( unless it had humbuckers on )
