5 versus 7 major scale box shapes

I am a little confused on which set of box shapes to learn. I have found a list of 5 major scale box shapes and a list of 7.

5 box shapes:
http://www.guitarplayerworld.com/Shapes ... Scale.html

7 box shapes:
http://www.fretjam.com/major-scale-positions.html

I'm edging towards the 5 because there are 5 pentatonic box shapes and they fit (pattern wise) into the set of 5 major scale shapes all be it with a couple of notes missing (obviously).

However wouldn't learning the complete set of 7 major scale box shapes ultimately lead to a superior understanding of the fret board?

Looking forward to the words of wisdom ;)

Thanks.

Both have their uses. I find that both of them to be a bit clunky, however in box developing total playing freedom. But a 5 box shape are inversions of The Pentatonic, and 7 include those pentatonic, plus the 4 and 7. Basically, Major scales.

The Pentatonic is used more often by people because it is theoretically safer, because it doesnt create any minor 2nd dissonances, or notes that sound bad when played against the chord. Like playing F over a C chord, where the E and F pitched together create a min 2nd dissonance.

It sure is/was James, sad to say you missed it, but we all got together and had a ball.

I'd tell you who won, but we agreed that it wouldnt be right to spoil the ending for you, it will eventually be out on DVD.
