Just wanted to say that the wife and I are fine here in Japan

We don't live anywhere near the area. We are down south, but we live in the tsunami zone and 10 minutes inland from the ocean. We got some strong waves but they were not high. Boats got tossed around, that was about it. Japan is a total disaster at the moment. Over 1.3 million people being dispersed around the country. US military is arriving today with there helicopters.

It looks a right bloody mess from what I am seeing on the news.

The power of the waves is is far stronger then anyone can imagine.

On Saturday I took the kids to the railway musiam where they had a Japanese bullet train on show and I can tell you it was massive, the engine cart must have weighed in at over 100 tons.

I saw later on the news that one with carriages on it had been swept off the track by the wave.

That sort of force is frighting.

The pictures on the news have been pretty awful. But they did get me thinking - in one clip there was a short film of staff in a supermarket during the initial quake - they were holding on to stuff on the shelves trying to minimise the amount of breakage. Had that been the UK the staff would've been diving under a counter with the telephone and the directory looking up the number for Claims Direct
