Playing onto a computer

Post by mikeyBoab »

I'm not one for technology. How can I record onto my laptop? Is there some sort of cord I can get to plug into my laptop and record a sound file straight onto the computer?

No laughing.

Yes just plug into the line in or mic socket - or get an audio interface if you're really up for it!

I assume you are going to record electric?

run sound recorder ( programs-->accessories-->entertainment-->sound recorder )read the help
files and start recording ..if you want to get serious download soundforge or something
similar ( see james's post )

you dont need a dedicated soundcard for starters

if you have no interface use a git lead with a mini jack on one end so you can plug into
the mic i/p of your soundcard or use a mic ( for acc ) with the same type of plug
if you have a small mixer ( interface ) plug that into the line i/p..plug your git or mic into the mixer
and record from that
the computer ins ( and outs )are stereo..using 3.5mm stereo mini jacks ( usually )

usb interfaces are available but i wouldn't use one personally

Yeah, I want to use the acoustic electric. So I can just go to the local guitar shop and say "I need a cord that'll allow me to plug the guitar into the computer" without the sales assistant reaching for the panic button?

or get a spare lead and put a 3.5mm jack on one end ( this will plug into the mic i/p of your computer )
this will cost you about 20p instead of some silly price a shop will charge you
you can also get a guitar to usb cable
