The chord D/F# was instructed to use thumb on the E string with the normal D chord
this wasn't working for me, the neck of my guitar is too wide.. so i decided to put my first (pointer) finger on the E and do a D chord with my second third an fourth fingers.. my fingers can do this but my brain doesn't like it.. any other way to do it?

Hi iain
thanks I understand how to do the chords individually but not as one.
The instructional vid shows a D/F# so a regular D with the addition of the thumb curled over the top to the second fret of the E string.
My thumb wont curl over (without straining my thumb).. so my alternative is to use my first finger there and rearrange my other fingers for the D chord.. seems like those are the only way to play the chord.. yet it's taking my brain a while to think "Dchord plus" and finger it in not the same way..
I hope I am being clear.

try also :bottom E ..2nd fret ( 2nd finger )
A..open
D..open
G..2nd fret ( 3rd finger )....play top 4 strings only (E/A/D/G)
...its esp easy to get there from G open chord
or add B..3rd fret (pinky)....play top 5 strings only (E/A/D/G/B)
if you play the first version and play all the strings ( with B/E open as well)you
get the second chord in the old chestnut ' horse with no name '...Em///D9??///........or pretty close
