hammer ons and pull offs

Post by Hammy86 »

Hi, I was looking into hammer ons and pull offs am I right in thinking its changing notes by pressing down different frets on the same string but you only pick the note with your picking hand once? Sorry if the way it is worded is terrible lol :)

I'm actually posting a video this Saturday about this topic, watch this space :P

But yes your basically right:

A pull off is when you play a note, then while sustaining the note drag the fretting finger down and off the string, basically plucking the string with that finger playing the note below on the same string.

While a Hammer on is the opposite where after playing your initial note and keeping it sustained, you "hammer down" another finger on the same string at a higher fret.

:)

we'll start with "h"
this stands HAMMER. which simply means that you hit like a hammer on the
specified note..
consider notes :

b----5h7---

So this basically means that you will first play 5th fret with your index finger.. and keeping your finger still on 5th fret you'll immediately hit 7th note with yer middle finger.

And this amazing sound you heard was of hammering.

Now "p" i.e "pull off"

e---7p5----- Well in this case you'll play the 7th fret first with your middle
finger but, you'll put your index finger on 5th fret already... so play 7th fret
and immediately pull your finger off the note. so automatically you're ringing
the 5th fret, as you kept your finger on it already.
