I guess in a way I am because I like to use the larger size picks. The standard size picks I don't even look at them any more. I do like the medium thick grade picks though

Yeah,I sure am, Joe- I don't know how people use little tiny floppy picks..the only way I can get really fast stuff going is with large triangle medium or hard picks- I always use Onyx if they are available... they are not available through the wholesalers we use and I don't mind for a minute taking the 100km round trip to the only local regional music store that stocks them every few months.

I am currently using the vai signature picks which are quite pointy and a nice weight. Sometimes on the acoustic guitar I favour a lighter pick

I wasn't when I first started and although I was advised I'd get different sounds etc I just though they all sounded the same.
As I've became more experienced with playing you really can hear a difference in picks.
Starting to get picky! (no pun intended

So what is your current favourite?

I think a pick should be chosen along with all other guitar gear, for sound (and comfort of course). I use thin one for strumming acoustic, a very thin one for a whimsical sound and the thick green dunlop ones for electric blues

What is a good pick for starters thin or fat or just in the middle. Does it even make a difference or is it just your own personal taste.

It does make a difference to sound but it is more a matter preference. The best thing to do is to get a thin, medium and heavy and see what suits you best.
I use a heavy pick most of the time, but sometimes when I am feeling crazy I swap to a lighter pick!
Some people like big picks and some like tiny ones. I personally get on well with the typical fender shaped picks.
At the moment I am using the Steve Vai signature picks, mainly because they are this shape but the end is very pointy which makes it great for faster playing!

It's a sort of wooden type thing with a long handle, and bits of wire you can make noises with, Hope that helps.
