To introduce myself, I've always loved music and had an interest in guitars. I bought one a long time ago and went for a few lessons but it's only lately I'm really getting back into it. For around 3 months I'd say, I've been teaching myself from internet on an almost daily basis. Mainly through sources such as Justinguitar and martyzsongz from youtube (that guy is so good)

I have an acoustic Yamaha F310, and I am able to play (albeit not very well) a couple of songs. I'd say the main areas I need to improve is in my strumming pattern, technique/playing notes more clearly (I find it difficult to not make at least one string vibrate with a dull sound) and then singing a long with guitar playing...I'm somebody who likes to hum a long or put my lungs into it and I haven't quite grasped how to combine the two without one speeding up too much

Anyway, that's enough about me. I hope I've given you an insight and I'm looking forward to talking with everyone and hopefully learning a bit more from more experienced players with equal passion.

What sort of music are you hoping to play?

And congrats on taking the initiative to learn! I imagine learning guitar off the internt is one of the hardest things to do.

thanks guys, mikey I'm hoping to play alternative and indie/rock type of songs as that's really what I'm into.

Do you think I should upgrade to an electric as I've heard the strumming and making notes sound clearer (especially barre chords) is a lot easier for beginners?

Welcome to the forum! It is always handy having both electric and acoustic guitars - they suit different music.

I'm not sure if strumming is different on an electric but generally it is easier to play chords on an electric.

You'll get it with practice anyhow!

Thanks Olly, do you have any recommendations on an electric guitar I should go for?

Obviously the cheaper the better but I want something that is good quality also.

Hi AJ23, I have just started to learn and I am in love with my ESP Ltd MH 100, I have named it after the wife. Although I have to tell the wife its not as sexy as her. It is nice and easy to play, light and not at all cumbersome, it has a thin neck which makes life a tad easier compared to a friends jazz master.

I haven't really played many different guitars recently so it would be wrong of me to comment. However, there are many decent lower end guitars these days that sound good, play nicely and look great too!

The best thing to do is get down to your local guitar store and give some a whirl and see what takes your fancy!
