Topic: guitar strings again!

I was hoping I could get a little help please. My daughter and I started learning guitar about 18 months ago, as she is getting to be pretty good now I decided to up grade from the cheap argos guitar she had to a second hand yamaha C 40. The guitar itself is good condition but is needing re strung. Im fairly confident I can do it but I was wondering what is the best type of strings to get for it. Strangely enough for a 13 year old she likes to play country and western or blue grass styles of music. It is fitted with nylon strings just now but I dont know enough about them to pick a quality make.

Re: guitar strings again!

Well its all a matter of preference really and I guess trial and error. If it is a classical guitar with nylon strings and this is what she is used to then I would go for similar.

You can change to steel strings which will match more with the music but if the guitar  is a classical guitar you may find the neck is wider than an acoustic guitar and with the steel  strings, it can be difficult to get used to.

Basically the necks on classical are wider and their designed to have nylon. Standard acoustic guitars generally have a narrower neck and are meant for steel strings but both can be used with both

Yes her C 40 does have a wide neck compared to my guitar,
Could you recomend any particular make or are nylon strings all much the same regardless of make and price?

there are different qualities in the different manufacturers but you would find it hard to tell the difference.

I would just pick any brand and see how you go

Re: guitar strings again!

I was taught never to put steel strings on a classical guitar - the neck is not designed for the tension . . .
