Topic: Problems when playing standing up.

Hi, first post here.

When I'm sitting down I reckon I'm an alright guitarist...but when I play standing up I'm absolutely awful. The first problem is picking. If the guitar is tilted at all upwards, the pick scrapes the string, and it's hard to play fast, and sometimes the scrape comes through on the amp.
The second is stretching my fingers. I just absolutely cannot stretch my fingers on the deepest few strings. On the E string I can't even fret the 3rd fret and hammer on the 5th.

Does anyone know any way to stop these things happening?

Thanks.

Mike

Re: Problems when playing standing up.

Most first class guitarists have the guitar supported by the strap whether they are standing or sitting. This means that even when sitting the guitar should be slightly above your thigh.

If this feels wrong then you probably have some changes to make to your technique.

Find an excellent tutor who really know about technique.

Personally, I've found a lot of new guitar players try to wear their guitar way too low to try to look cool like some of the pros do. I can't understand how they can play that way. You have to bend your wrist at more of an angle and it just feels wrong to me. I wear my guitar above my waist and can play a lot easier. I don't know if this is what you're doing but something to keep in mind anyway.

I can relate to your pain.  Feel free to check my lesson on playing the guitar standing and how to adjust the straps properly.  Here at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ui7Agkakkzc
