Did you have your site designed and set up for you, Olly? And if so, was it expensive?
No I set it up myself based on oscommerce. I also based it on my other site http://www.jbosolutions.co.uk which formed the template - I paid for the design on this one but implemented it myself.
How about your site? Do you maintain this yourself?
Yes, I change the specials, pics and music courses every few months- I used JustHost to set it up, and found them cheap ( around 200 bucks for two years including domain name reg) and with a wide range of easy templates, plus a great chat facility for help. I can see what you mean about the same template on the computor site, and it presents very well indeed- the chat help is a great idea.
When I get a little spare time and you have as well I'd like to run a few more questions past you if that's OK- by message so I don't distract from the forum flow.
The ideal thing I feel would be to establish myself another income stream as old age creeps on
I've been looking at the oscommerce option since reading your post above, open source commercial options were something I was not aware of, and this looks like it would do the trick...a great forum, as well.
Also, quite a lot of adverse comment about Paypal.
Paypal can be a rel pain. They charge you a lot, they change their rules when they please and when something goes wrong, they simply take the money back for the transaction and you cannot speak to anyone who can help you.
This is something that new online businesses should be wary of. Fraud is very high online and if you supply something and the transaction turns out to be fraudulent, you are the one paying for it. I got stung myself for well over £1000 when I first started my business. It nearly prevented me from continuing.
That is scary stuff Olly. How do you protect yourself when there are so many scammers out there? Do you just get a sort of sixth sense when it comes to particular transactions?
Yes you kind of have to look at each transaction and see whether it is a high risk item or not.
There are a few checks out there that can help but you do have to be so careful.

I've been using Paypal for well over 2 years. As a consumer, I think it's a great payment gateway especially where monthly subscriptions is concerned. You can cancel anytime you want without the hustle of going through support desk as most using credit card services that's always giving you problems.
I don't have any merchant account with them so I can't comment on their charges.
