Topic: Need some ideas on how best to teach a 6 year old

I have a six year old lad who comes to me for half hour lessons. I show him chords using the top 4 strings only (he's left handed and parents cant find a 3/4 size guitar in lefty) and we do some songs which he seems to enjoy. I just feel Id like to at least start progressing him on more interesting things but lacking ideas.

So is the issue that the guitar body is just too big for him or is there also a difference in the neck size on a 3/4?

Teach him melodies, and single note stuff.  If you are being paid to teach and it were me Id have a heart to heart talk that the lessons will have less than optimal results until he can get situated with a properly sized guitar.

I would just keep plugin away, kids are very resilient, I have 6 I know. (Well I only got a guitar 6 months ago). Ask him, at 6 he probably will know what he likes. Or ask him to listen to some music and decide.

Re: Need some ideas on how best to teach a 6 year old

I have a similar problem. I have a 6 year old student who is a little sponge when it comes to information but the physical aspect of playing the guitar is elusive. I'm trying to find ways around this but am struggling.
She has a toy guitar at present which is obviously not up to the job. Maybe with a better guitar she will be able to produce a decent sound although it is a gamble for the parents to buy a guitar which she still might not be able to play. On the other hand, if they want her to pursue the guitar then they should invest in a guitar that is up to the job.
I will be having a chat with the parents following her next lesson to discuss this very topic but any advice would obviously be very welcome?? default/hmm

Just make him do some finger exercises and teach him some simple melodic licks..
I wud just love to see a six year old playing melodic lines..

Re: Need some ideas on how best to teach a 6 year old

get him on a full size right hand guitar ASAP
theres no reason for "lefthandedness"
