Do you ever visit there? Is it completely back to normal there now, as in totally habitable?

I know so little on the subject!

The wife and I haven't visit Hiroshima mostly because it really is a boring city. At least that is what she tells me. We have been to Nagasaki though. Both cities have rebounded with full life.  Nagasaki is probably the better of the two to see if do come to Japan.

Yeah I love sushi. It's hard to come by the real stuff here; we have a few Japanese restaurants dotted around but they tend to be pretty expensive.

What's the price of a meal in a sushi bar like over there John?

At the rotating sushi bars, 2 peices of low end sushi run about ¥130or  about $1.25  Usually one spends about ¥1000per person and that really fills me up anyway.  I don't really like to visit the rotating bars during the summer months though.  Because of the enviroment. Fish doesn't seem to stay to fresh going around that bar for very long. And really the air conditioner is of no help.  Just my opinion.

welcome aboard

I'll have a listen to it

Well I just listened to it. Nice play'n there. Volume was a bit too low to really get into your playing, but overall you got some fast fingers there

Ok, I think most people these days have tried sushi at least once. But tonight we are having homemade sushi!

When I first started working hard on the guitar I assumed that I couldn't really write songs because my guitar wasn't up to scratch,. Of course, I now know that this was not correct.

I admire the technically great guitarists(Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert etc) and I like their music but I wonder if I would like them so much  if I wasn't a guitar player. I certainly would still like music so I would say I would prefer to be a super songwriter and an ok guitarists rather than the other way round.

Olly, I thought your answer was interesting. I think as we get older we understand what Bon Jovi said "Learn to write songs". There is a lot of truth to that.

Well, you can look at the key signiture, but a real guitarists way is to run up and down the notes on the bass string until you find the note that matches the first and last chord- if the song starts on another chord, the last chord is the best bet ie: if the song ends on a G, the song is in G...if it's in a minor key, the match will come on the note three frets lower, so Em is relative to G, Am is relative to C and so on.

Wow aussie, thanks, you made it sound so simple

I certainly prefer a low action myself suits my style of playing.

Are there actually any advantages to a high action?

I think maybe if someone is using the guitar mainly for slide playing

Are you referring to the height of the bridge? Defining how high the strings are off of the fretboard?

Can someone give a simple answer.

Today marks the 65 anniversary of the Atomic Bomb.  I only live about an 1.5 hours from Hiroshima and todays event is being broadcast worldwide.  I don't think the bomb is our greatest threat anymore, but chemical warfare is our biggest threat. And for some reason it is being downplayed.  Well, here is an article:

I'm kind of behind times, but "automatic tuning" is my latest update.

What have you guys notice new recently?

I'm not one for a neck that has a high action on it. I'm lucky that the guitar I bought stock came with a low action neck setting. My acoustic isn't low, but it really isn't too high either.

What would you choose?
Because I never really felt a ease with my guitar playing, I kind of found my comfort zone in writing songs. So these days I strum a bit and write my own tunes. And I'm quite happy doing it too!

I think the first complete song was either "Stepping Stone" or maybe "House of the Rising Sun".

I like the  9 to either 42 or 46.  The 46 does give the chords a full more body in my opinion. And they really are not much harder to play on.

Hi olly

It was fun for me posting during the month of July. I didn't quite make 100 post, but maybe this month. That was my secret goal.  I'll say "3" for the number. And good luck to the 4 people.

When I was at an international airport in America a few years ago, I said to myself, what happened.  I always felt ( other than people with medical problems) that the chemicals that are put into food these days make us eat more, kind of like the chickens that eat 24 hours a day with the lights on.  Is it true, I think so.

Anyway here is an article:

What is your favorite guitar polish?

I've been using "Gibson guitar polish" here since it the cheapest and I've been quite happy with it

Whenever I try and think of lyrics they are always too literal. This is one of the aspects I am struggling with at the moment.

How do you even begin with your lyrics? What do you first write down?

I think for me it just comes down with a split second though that I connect with. And within that thought I usually see a title.  Using a title first gives me direction and keeps me focus on how I want to work my thoughts thoughout the song. I always write the lyrics as I strum , that way I can get the syllables to match the strumming patterns.  Also I never start a new song till the one I'm working on is finished. But of course rewrites are a common practice of mine.

For me, it just comes down to "feel of the fretboard".  The maple neck seems to have a faster feel to it than a rosewood, but may be most people might disagree with that

Currently I do not believe avatars are installed. I can add them if you really want.

I quite like it nice a plain and simple on the eye. Always up for feedback on improvements though!

OK.  Avatars are cool and may liven up the scenery a bit. Those that want to use one will.
