Got that Tele screaming some there John  I've played on my own for a few years now    but it's cool, It's just a beautiful thing to be able to play and enjoy playing, rock on mate,

Can you not take them back and exchange for the correct ones? although I've always thought they were quite standard sizes, you could always take the correct size wood drill, and insert into the peg hole and give it a couple of turns by hand, (not in a drill) this should give you the extra depth you need, 

and the screw holes on the plate don't make any difference as the old ones will covered anyway,
