thanks Olly, would appreciate it

James - I usually just go for some online chords. I did find some but it sounded wrong so I just played the song over and over along with all the chords I know (well that's an exaggeration I had an idea what chord progressions might be used) and eventually came out with something that I can sing to that doesn't sound too odd.

I have seen one video of the artist play live and she uses the whole fret board - while my chords stay at the first few frets - so I don't know - she's obviously playing the same chords just further up the fret board? But I don't know enough to know how that makes a difference to the sound.

Keep on plucking!

Hi Everyone

I have been listening and trying to get the chords for this song

the online chords that I found didn't seem right so I have got

C  G  Am  F G
C  G  Am  F G
Dm Em FCG
FCG Dm Em F
then back to C for the second verse.

I get a little unstuck at the bridge though

is it Am F G (or C) ?

and I am also not sure on the last few lines

is it

F                                          Dm      Em? sounds odd
10000 stones would save the fool in me

I don't know what the next line is  maybe

F                                    Am      Dm
10000 stones would be a strange blessing

last line

F                                          G         C
10000 stones would build the best in me

This is the first time I have ever tried to work out the chords by just listening..  how did I do?

How are you getting on with "more than words"?

I think I managed to work it out in the end default/smile .. but I still have trouble with the combined D/F#  chord..  your thread about your elbow made me rethink how I was doing it - because hooking my thumb over the top of the neck was really hurting. So now I am up to the stage where I can do the song ok but hesitate on that one chord change...  more practice of the fingering change I guess. default/smile

How long does it take you to master a new song?

Apache  how's the elbow going with the Greenday song?

In my experience it's really up to the parent and how much they are going to put in too.

I agree that a four year old is not going to take it on themselves to practice, but with parental influence and encouragement.. it can be done. That encouragement should not just be 'do your practice'  but taking a real interest in the music and the result (even if it's not perfect letting a child know they have entertained you is a huge boost to them)

Also agree that modelling and having them watch their parent enjoying the instrument is encouragement.

with my own children, I am having them learn the basics with the piano and when they are six am letting them choose their instrument. So they will have already spent two years learning some basic music theory before they try to apply it to more than one instrument, as well as gain some finger strength and coordination. I have three months to go with my eldest to choose and she has wanted to play violin since she was three.. lately, though she is leaning towards the guitar  (please say guitar, please say guitar..)

Being a teacher of music appreciation to young children (6months - 4.5) I have often found that they learn a lot by simple immersion. So many parents who think their three year old is not participating come back the next week and tell me how the child has been singing all the songs etc during the week.
So lots of different types of percussion instruments for them to listen to play with. Talk about the different sounds (pitch) and the length of sounds (staccato and legato) and the timbre of the instruments/ and then play and look at different beats.  great start to music and no pressure.

Been working on More than Words..  but I'm too cheap to pay for the last two instructional vids so I'm making the second half up as I go  default/roll

also working on getting some music for some lyrics I have written - I'm a little worried it might turn out to be G (tap) cadd9 (tap) Am7 (tap)     hahaha

I write poetry which I have occasionally put to music. I've got a very streety folksy (read easy to play) sound though.. so not much interest to real players  lol

Hi iain

thanks  I understand how to do the chords individually but not as one.
The instructional vid shows a D/F#   so a regular D with the addition of the thumb curled over the top to the second fret of the E string.
My thumb wont curl over (without straining my thumb).. so my alternative is to use my first finger there and rearrange my other fingers for the D chord..    seems like those are the only way to play the chord..  yet it's taking my brain a while to think "Dchord plus" and finger it in not the same way..

I hope I am being clear.

The chord D/F#   was instructed to use thumb on the E string with the normal D chord

this wasn't working for me, the neck of my guitar is too wide.. so i decided to put my first (pointer) finger on the E and do a D chord with my second third an fourth fingers..  my fingers can do this but my brain doesn't like it..  any other way to do it?

my first crappy acoustic was cheap and nasty, but I still liked the sound. My newish one is nicer to both look at and play, but I still occasionally play the old one.. it's like putting a 78 on a record player.

Hey there

I have been strumming for a few months with any real gusto, know a few chords and think I'm almost ready for late-at-night-campfire level entertainment..  really really late at night.

Anyway.. having listened to a few of the home recordings here on this site I see  that I have a long way to go.. it would help if I understood the basics of music but I don't.. which is ironic because my job is implementing a junior music program for young children..  luckily you don't need to know much past do re me fa so to behave like a playschool presenter/ the fifth wiggle/justine clarke (any of those familiar?) Fun job though default/smile

Anyway I recently got dumped and so I'm full of fire and angry poetry at the moment. I hope I can get something out of it... and turn it into a song or two.

I wrote my 'first song' just before I got dumped and it's so melancholic and self pitying that you'd think I might have seen the oncoming onslaught... i didn't - haha.

Anyway, I have only ever played in front of a group of very drunk friends once before. and just one song.. I think I suffer from stage fright, but I hope to at least entertain an invisible audience for better or worse....
