I think learning music notes can help you when you start doing ensemble playing, such as in a jazz band. If there is a unison lick that you play with other instruments, it will usually be written as notes on a staff.  You don't need to be a speed reader, but at least being able to recognize the notes and slowly figure them out on the guitar is helpful.  Good luck!

Cool site, it looks like it is an online encyclopedia teaching music concepts.  Seems a little dry but is probably good for intermediate/advance students or adult students.  Good find default/smile

I recently started a website called http://www.OpusMusicWorksheets.com that has practice worksheets online - I'm curious to know your thoughts on the site and materials.  There are free printable flashcards, theory worksheets, etc.  To help with note reading, there is also a worksheet that can test how many notes you can name on the grand staff within a minute.  Might be useful for guitar students who are looking for practice on note recognition and speed.
Happy playing!

If you want to start music lessons at 3, I would recommend to take your son to a group music learning environment, such as Kinder Musik.  I also think that 3 is a bit young to start.  The attention won't be there, the coordination, and even reading of music will be difficult.  I think that 6 is a good age to start private lessons.  Good luck!

Anyone ever enrolled in music exams?  As a music teacher, I often put my private music students in the Royal School of Music exams (www.abrsm.org).  These are great because the student must be well-rounded and pass in technique, performance, sight-reading, ear-training, and theory.  It will teach students to be very well-rounded musicians.  There are 8 levels and in my opinion, the last level is equivalent to an undergraduate college level.

There are exams for guitar that are worth looking into.  Check it out!!

Hi all! I wanted to share with you all a great site to find private guitar teachers.  It is Opus Music Education.  They are based in the Los Angeles area and offer private guitar teachers that come to your home for the lesson.  All the tuition rates are displayed on the website.  Good for beginner guitar students!

One suggestion I would have when you are a new teacher, is to maintain a professional studio.  Clean up, put away clutter, and make a welcoming, clean, and professional environment.  Putting your college diploma framed on the wall is a nice touch (especially if you majored in music).  Have a clean waiting area for parents without distractions from pets.  This will hopefully increase your sign-up rate of music students after the first lesson.  Good luck!

As a music teacher, what do you do when a student misses lessons?  Do you assign double the work, or just the same amount of workload?  Do you require them to take a longer lesson right before they leave?  any thoughts are appreciated, thanks!

For beginning music students, I usually divide their assignments into 3 main categories:

1. Technique - learning scales, fingering, chords, etc.
2. Lesson songs - songs that the student needs to learn so it will help progress them to be a better player
3. Fun songs - songs that the student wants to learn

Usually without #3, the student will be bored and may risk quitting music lessons.  Good luck!
