Hi everyone,

I've just signed up and already enjoying the banter!  Good to so many people enjoying their music and the guitar.

Bit about me: Been playing for 17 years or so.  Started out with classical, moved into electric in early teens and picked up the acoustic a few years later.  I teach guitar in Manchester and gig in various places around the UK.

Hope to chat to some of you soon!

Ed

I'm starting a beginner guitar course in Manchester sometime in the next couple of months and I'm wondering if anyone could suggest a good location?

I'm looking at Urmston and Winton at the moment.  Are there any beginner guitarists on the forum from Manchester?  You're input here would be very welcome!

Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thanks,

Ed

As the guitar teacher you should be taking control of the lesson.  Assess their playing and respond by formulating a lesson plan to improve their playing.  As a guitarist who is learning, they might not even be aware of what could be better.  For them they're playing as well as they ever have!

With some students you can rely on their feedback to give you an insight into how their practice went that week.  With other students you have to do a bit more investigative work.

Is this student a teenager by any chance?  Not wanting to stereotype or anything here but from experience, they tend to be less vocal about how they feel they're doing.

Hey Olly,

Two things you can do:

1. Request payments one week in advance.  In other words, at the end of the lesson the student should pay for next weeks lesson.  This means if they don't show up at least you haven't lost that weeks wages.

2. Contracts.  If you have your lesson policy in writing you will not have to deal with troublesome students.  Luckily these are few and far between but they do exist.  The good students will have no problem signing your lesson policy and abiding by it.  The troublesome students probably won't want to sign it.  You won't get any business from them, but that's a good thing considering the stress it causes chasing them up.
