No backing tracks.Just relentless practising. It does get boring and frustrating at first, but it gets more enjoyable when you start getting the scales into memory.I am assured that you have to be bored, before it gets better, which is the case in most things. But i am enjoying it.
No pick, just the two fingered walking method.
The reason i took Bass lessons, is because i have arthiritis in my hands.I always wanted to play the guitar, but the restricted movements in my hands, i thought Bass might be easier, as i only have 4 strings, with wider gaps in between.I would do well to be average, as i am learning that you need a wide hand to cover 4 frets with 4 fingers. My pinky isn`t very manovarable, so it may restrict me, but it is getting betterI have new treatments which has stopped it getting worse for now, so thought it may help to get them moving.Anyway, that is the reason i took bass.

As in the first lesson,it always starts on fret 5.The numbers denote finger positioning.Taking the Maj.7 Arpeggio, start at the 5th fret, 2nd finger, then to 1st finger, 4th finger,3rd finger, then 4th finger. When you get to the last 4, work backwards until you get back to number 2.They are all basically the same with all the Arpeggio`s and the Pentatonic scales.Hope that makes sense

The only bit of advice i have from taking lessons is this.My teacher said you need to read music, and try to structure the music so it flows.I am not familiar with much of the fretboard, but try to keep all the notes close and not from one end of the fretboard to the other, continually, as it doesn`t flow and will be hard to play. That was all i was told, but no idea if it has any relevance.

Ok.it just seems as if it is on its last legs.People sign on, post about 2 messages never to be seen again. There doesn`t seem to be many older members about so i just assumed most must have moved to other forums.I`ll stick around though

Been here for  about 2 weeks and hardly anyone posts anything,So just wondered if there are lots of people that actually use this site on a regular basis, or people just choose not to post anything

Sorry if I sounded like a prick but was just responding to someone and trying to prove a point.

No, you are far from sounding a prick Chris.I am genuinly impressed by what you have taught yourself so far.It is very possible to learn anything on your own if you have the confidence and self motivation that you have.
On the Rocksmith side, it is a good programme. It will teach you how to play the song, but it won`t teach you how to play a song that is not included.I think it is a good aid to teaching, just not on it`s own.It is very addictive and impressive though, as it can even detect if you have a bum note, or perfect timing. For £40 or so, i would recommend it.I love it

The only reason i suggested lessons, is because you had a £500 budget, which would get you a decent guitar, amp and money left over for lessons. Plus from a personal perspective, i am  easily distracted, so a teacher has given me focus and direction. I was lucky, as i have a freind who goes to him and is getting on really well, so it was easy for me to get a good teacher.
If you want to learn yourself, just a suggestion, maybe a decent £10 book would be a good start before you go the youtube route.I am sure there are some great tutorials, but i wouldn`t know which are good or bad.
Anyway, good luck with playing, and i look forward to see how you progress, especially if self taught.
Also i agree with Polyal about keyboards. The written word can be easily misconstrued.

Lots of people teach themselves. So yes, it is a possibility. I got lessons and i am glad i did.I have a structure, the tutor shows you how t play scales and read music and points you in  the right direction if you go wrong.it is better to eliminate bad habits before they start in my opinion. But yes, you can learn yourself. That is what this forum is about, to give you help and advice, and i have had some very good advice in this forum.

look for a secondhand guitar. You can often get a good one for a £2-£300 , and it will be worth that if you decide to sell it.Buy a new guitar for £200. and it will be worth half that.Go on ebay, look at the guitars around your budget, then copy and paste any you like, and look at reviews. You can also see how much they would cost if you had bought new.Mine cost £300 second hand, but would cost me £750 if i bought it new. If you buy a Strat,, it will probably go up in value over time, especially if it is American made. You should pay less to for a Meican or Japanese made Strat
Guitar lessons.I paid £100 for 6 lessons, so budget for that, and maybe £70 for a nice second hand amp, or around £130 for a new one

Perhaps you would prefer her version of Highway to Hell James? The funny thing is, you can even buy it from Amazon.

The Muse cover. Now that song i do like. i can`t really comment on how good technically you are, as i can`t play the guitar, but i do know what i like, and i liked that guitar playing. That was very good. I subscribed so i can listen to more as you post them.
Never heard of Porcupine Tree, but that was also good

Is the Pentatonic scale the same for Bass and guitar. and if so, are all the scales the same for both?

Of course it is all subjective, and Woodstock and The Wonder Years TV theme tune helped make Joe cocker`s version more famous than the Beatles. It was years later after seeing Woodstock that i realised it was The Beatles who had the original.  Joe Cocker`s performance at Woodstock was totally awesome to me, and still can`t be matched for the raw power of his voice  .That is why i say, if there was such a thing as making it your own,as it is so different, i would say that this song would be the closest to it.But as you say, a cover, is a cover, no matter how much better, or worse than the original.

I think put your own spin on it, is often said by talent judges as they are so used to only doing cover versions themselves, and have no tangible talent except coining stupid phrases to make themselves sound as if they know what  they are talking about.
But if to make the song your own from talented people, i would say that the person who made a song better than the original, would be With a Little Help From my Friends by Joe Cocker.Anyone that can make a song by the beatles, more famous than their version has got to be good

I just thought James, Haven`t you got 2 awful songs tied up up.Clive Dunn`s song was just Grandad, and the similarly awful tune is Grandma We Love You, St. Winifreds School Choir. You decide which is worst

Sorry Eliot, i couldn`t get past the first 30 seconds of the first video.I don`t think i am a fan of Lamb of God  default/tongue . The Zakk Wylde cover i enjoyed, and the Tool one sounded good, but again not my type of music

Yes i have, but it is a guitar amp, not a bass.I just looked at that one and thought it was cheap.I was thinking of trying to sell the Marshall, and buy a bass amp. But when i saw the cheap one, i thought it maybe ok, and keep the Marshall in case i fancy the guitar in a couple of years.I couldn`t sell it and use the cash to buy that one though, as it would seem sacralige to part with a Marshall to replace it with a Maplins default/tongue

Ok. Thanks for the advice.I was sort of thinking that would be the answer.

As the topic subject suggests

Thanks for the reply.Sometimes, you read some stuff on other sites, and it can get quite condescending between guitarists and Bass players, so you don`t always get a sensible straight answer. At least i can still use the amp i have.Perhaps i will sell it and use the money to buy a bass amp.

Hope they are clear enough as i had to go over it in black pen, as the pencil wasnt dark enough to scan

If you look at the Pentatonic Scale, you start at the 5th fret. The numbers correspond to your fingers. So you start with your first finger on string 4, then your fourth finger to fret 9, then back to finger 1 on string 3, then 3rd finger on string 3, back to first finger on 2nd string, to 3rd finger on second string. Then straight back to first finger on 2nd string , and just carry on backwards until you reach the 5th fret 4th string where you started from.Basically that is the same with all the scales.
Hope that is clear

I have a Marshall amp that i bought a few years ago for a guitar i bought.I now have a bass, and from what i have read, the opinion is divided as to whether i can play my bass through this amp without blowing it up.Now bear in mind i am learning so i dont want to embarress myself by having it too loud.Too be honest, i am baffled by bass amps, but would it be ok to continue playing through the amp i have without worrying about breaking it?
