Topic: Best amp for bedroom practice?

Well this has always been an issue of mine. how to get a good valve sound from an amp at low volumes.

I have tried powerbrakes and power attenuators - this didn't work. I tried lower wattage amps but still too loud.

I have now got a valvestate amp which I am finding ok although it lacks the tone and punch of the valve amp.

What does everyone else use?

Re: Best amp for bedroom practice?

I think we should have amps with 5 watts or so or which can communicate at volume 1-4 with guitar. You should try some 5 watt amp, I hope it will work.

Even 5 watts is very loud.

5 watts goes not equal half that of a 10watt amp.

It would really need to be under 1 watt to be the best.

I have not heard of any such thing.

Did you find some solution for that? I am keen to know about it.

A good cheap valve amp with a KILLER sound is the WEM clubman. 5w I think - loud enough but breaks up at a low enough volume to get away with

WEM did some great gear back in the day

Even 5W is really loud - though if it sounds good at lower volumes then bonus.

I have been using the Blackstar 1W amp recently. It is pretty good at lower volumes. It is also crazy how loud 1w can be at full volume!

Re: Best amp for bedroom practice?

Olly, please tell me more about the 1w blackstar, I have been giving it some thought for recording.

Re: Best amp for bedroom practice?

Well I haven't used it much but I will get some stuff recorded so you can hear.

The main issue is for me that it doesn't have an effects loop - the primary sound that I want is distortion/overdrive and delay and without an effects loop I am limited to pedals to create the distortion/overdrive rather than the amp itself.

It sounds pretty good though. I need to spend some more time playing with it to see if it really could be a viable recording amp

Re: Best amp for bedroom practice?

regard effects loop look at pod farm or amplitube.

Could work

As in plug ins? Could work for recording but not so much for general playing.

The Blackstar HT1R is a cracking amp but overpriced at £199 I think. Good build quality and decent celestion speaker. You can plyg it into an external cab too for extra oomph.
