is it true that hendrix only had a bass player ( and drummer ) because he could never stay in tune

Clapton says that the best Hendrix performance was "wild thing" with his guitar well out tune...
Imagine if the words of Imagine ever came true.....

I don't really understand how anyone could really play guitar that out of tune - was it in tune to itself and just out of tune to other instruments?

it always seemed to me that he was approximately in tune but not particularly around
standard pitch...in those days there were no tuners like we have now
it was..pitch pipes/tuning fork..or get a note off the keyboard player if he wasnt too pissed

hendrix's whole sound was based on bending and vibrato..so really light gauge strings
were a must..not the easiest setup for keeping in tune..esp if your're high as a kite
