I don't seem to be having the most amount of luck with my new classical guitar.

I managed tog et my slipping string issue sorted but now I have broken one of the tuning pegs and I am not sure how to go about finding a replacement.

Once I brought the strings up to near tuned almost all the tuning pegs were REALLY difficult to turn. So much so that I really could not do it with my hands alone, so I was using my string winder to assist.

I know that they should not be this hard to turn but I am not sure what to do to ease it up.

Anyhow, I now have ended up snapping one of the plastic parts of the peg.

So is it possible to replace just this part or does teh stiffness mean I should look to changing all tuning pegs?

Hi Olly, Usually when the tuner goes tight under full tension it is usually due to wear in the brass worm gear, this causes it to slip between the teeth on the tuner, then they try to pass each other as they are out of sync, this causes the tightness, you can buy the buttons singly but I would advise a complete new set of tuners, not that expensive for classical guitars.

Got my new tuners today so hopefully be able to get this guitar up and running within the next couple of days!

I must be getting more patient in my old age as I previously would have been tearing my hair out not being able to try a new purchase for this long!

Unfortunately nothing is ever simple...

I got my new tuners but they wouldn't quite fit fully into the head.

It looks like they are slightly longer than the others.

So I thought I would swap the new ones with the old but they are slightly different.

So now I am going to have to mix and match parts to get it to fit - ie new tuners with the worm drive, using the old plate and gear and whatever the part is called the string wraps around!

Actually that idea doesn't work as the new tuners do not fit on the old plate. The new plates screw holes don't line up either!

Can you not take them back and exchange for the correct ones? although I've always thought they were quite standard sizes, you could always take the correct size wood drill, and insert into the peg hole and give it a couple of turns by hand, (not in a drill) this should give you the extra depth you need,


and the screw holes on the plate don't make any difference as the old ones will covered anyway,

In the end I swapped the parts as mentioned and currently I have 2 of the 4 screw holes holding it in place. I'm going to drill new screw holes now - the guitar now tunes up fine so at least the problem has been resolved!
