Having a well setup instrument is a must for anyone wanting to learn how to play. All of the comments above are spot on and easy for someone with a bit of experience to overcome. However, the new player might not even realise they are having these issues in the first place.
This is why I think it is always important to get a guitar properly set up by someone who knows what they are doing. This provides a good fundamental starting point for the new guitarist. Then as time goes on and more epereince is gained, learning simple adjustments is a great way to keep on top of maintenence.
