Rhythm tone often gets less attention than lead tone, but it’s arguably more important in a mix. How do you approach dialling in rhythm tones?

I reduce gain more than I think I need. Too much gain makes rhythm parts muddy.

I focus on mids rather than scooping them. It helps the guitar sit better in a mix.

I try to balance both. A good guitar through the wrong amp still won’t sound great.

Picking dynamics and tight playing matter just as much as amp settings.

I lay ground rules.
Never use a guitar volume pot above 8.
Humbuckers need the tone control never above 7.
Then I set up my gainiest lead tone on my amp, using mids and slight boost from a Koko Boost pedal.
For rhythm work, I now have the complete range from 1-6 on the guitar, and can switch off the Koko if it needs to be cleaner.
It really is that simple.
Having a band that understand levels and dynamics is the main battle. Present them with your levels that you work to, and get them to fall into line. Then, the slight compromise of the ‘roll-off’ setup makes perfect musical sense.
