One of the most common questions beginners ask is how long it takes to learn guitar.

The honest answer depends on:

What style you want to play

Whether you focus on songs or exercises

A rough guide:

1–2 months

Simple songs

Basic rhythm

3–6 months

Smoother chord changes

More songs

It took me about a year before I felt comfortable playing with other people.

This is a really good guide. It is important to manage expectations.

I have seen many people pick up a guitar and be amazed how quickly they can start playing a few chords. However, they quickly become frustrated when everything else doesn't come as quickly and then give up all together.

This is a lifelong journey of learning. You never 'complete' the game and there is always soemthing else to learn or to work on.

It is a mindset that some people do struggle with when first starting out!
