Is it as easy as plugging the guitar into a pc?

I mostly record direct using amp simulation plugins. It’s convenient and lets me tweak tones after recording without redoing parts.

To do this you really need a decent audio interface which provides good quality audio and low latency. If you don't have low latency then your processed guitar sound is slightly delayed in playback which makes it very hard to play and it feels very unnatural.

You can pick up decent audio interfaces at a really cheap cost these days. Especially on the second hand market. And plugins are often low cost or even free. You should definitely start experimenting!

I prefer miking a real amp when possible because I like how the room and speaker interaction affects the sound. It takes more setup but can sound more natural.

However, this is something that requires a little more skill and decent gear to achieve and probably not the best route for someone just testing the waters. Especially when the digital route can be so simple to get a good sound.
