Connecting what you hear to what you play while improvising is essential for developing as a guitarist. Keep pushing yourself to make that connection stronger.

I agree with Markw72, the connection between what you hear and what you play is crucial. Keep practicing and it will become more natural over time.

Working on arpeggios is a fantastic way to improve your rhythm, theory, and technique all at once. Keep at it and you'll see progress!

The answer is always practising arpeggios for me. Everything else is just for enjoyment. When you practise arpeggios, you practise essentially infinite combinations of applicable rhythm, theory, and technique.

Rhythm. That and strumming patterns.

Yep… I started off just learning melody playing, and riffs…. Have been digging into smoother chord changes and attempting to add strumming while practicing whole note strums in songs… even if the Particular pattern isn’t correct, at least it gets my hands moving in a strumming rhythm. I also want to start working toward freeing up the fretboard more, without falling for all the crap about the mystery silver bullet that will fix all of your playing issues for just 29.95$ plus shipping and handling..oh the irony if it was actually that simple.

Have you tried breaking down the picking/strumming patterns into smaller sections and slowly building up speed and accuracy? It might help with getting the hang of it.

Improvising is a great goal to have! It really helps with developing your own style and musical voice on the guitar.

I can strum along with my favorite songs. I can finger pick. But I can’t combine strumming with picking individual strings. Ripple (Grateful Dead), Tell Me Why (Neil Young), etc. I just can’t get the hang of it.

I can relate to the struggle of combining strumming with picking individual strings. It takes time and practice, but keep at it!

As an acoustic player, I focus a lot on fingerstyle techniques and chord progressions. It's always interesting to hear what other guitarists are working on to improve their playing.
