I can write music, create melodies, play the piano, and even match notes vocally, but I struggle to identify them by name. I can't tell if it's A or D when I hear it, which makes it tough for me to recognize chords and such. Any advice?

I totally get where you’re coming from! I’ve been there too. Just remember, it takes time. Try to find songs that resonate with the intervals you’re learning. Play along and sing them out loud; it can be a fun way to reinforce what you’re hearing.

If you're looking to develop your ear, I highly recommend using an ear training app focused on interval recognition. Understanding the qualities of different intervals can really sharpen your skills. Each interval has its own unique sound that can be associated with melodies—there are plenty of songs that embody these intervals, which can make learning more engaging. You might also want to dive into chord recognition and rhythm exercises as part of your routine. Consistent practice is key.

Training your ear is an essential skill for any musician, and I commend you for seeking to improve. I suggest setting a structured practice schedule. Engage with interval training apps, and consider pairing up with someone who can offer feedback. Having a teacher can also provide valuable insights that self-study sometimes lacks.

It's great that you're already making music! Remember that many musicians find it easier to identify pitches relative to other notes or chords. Try to practice relative pitch exercises—there are many resources online. And don't stress if it doesn't come overnight; it's all part of the journey!
