Hey everyone, I've been thinking about my live performances lately, and I keep running into this dilemma. When I'm on stage, should I be focusing more on sustain or tone control? I play a mix of rock and blues, and I find that certain songs really benefit from a long, sustained note, but then there's times when the clarity and expression of my tone can make a huge difference too.

I’ve noticed some guitarists rely heavily on sustain to carry their solos, while others seem to have incredible control over their tone, even in the heat of a performance. I’m curious how you all approach this. Do you have a preference or a particular technique that helps you balance these two aspects?

I reckon it all depends on the song. For me, sustain is crucial during solos; it gives that emotional pull. But if you can't control your tone, even the best notes can sound muddy. Dial in your settings beforehand so you can focus on both during the gig.

Absolutely, Sam. Sustain brings a certain drama to a blues solo that can really pull the audience in. But I’ve found that if my tone isn't crisp, it can detract from the emotion I’m trying to convey. Sometimes I’ll set up my gear to favour sustain but make sure I have the right pedals to keep it clear.

I think a balance between the two is key! I love it when a guitarist can really nail those sustained notes but still keep the clarity. Maybe it's all about practice and knowing your gear well?
