Looks useful. Quite monochromatic though. Maybe a bit more visual jazzing up?

So in answer to the op (something I'd be eager to know too) - how often do you think one would change strings on average, based on a newbie practicing 5 hours or so a week?

Also - what can us newbs do (any sort of maintenance / cleaning etc) to keep our strings in tip top condition for as long as possible?

I have noticed mine (esp bottom e and b) get mucky sometimes.

Get a string cleaner like Fast Fret or Kyser string cleaner and give them a wipe down after each session and they'll last significantly longer. I tend to leave my strings on a fair amount of time but with a bit of experience you will hear it when they lose tone and elasticity. If you want that new string snap all of the time then you would need to change strings fairly regularly. Once you get tired of forking out for new sets you'll probably put up with a duller but still playable sound.

I'm really excited I've managed to get a day ticket for the Friday (2nd round ballot!) to see Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer & Anthrax.

Never seen Metallica live before - and have really wanted to, so looking forwards to it!

Only found out I'd got the ticket last night, so then had the challenge of finding a hotel that wasn't fully booked, but found one in the end...

Although I did have a mini brain wave (it happens occaisionally)i could connect to any speaker with an mp3 jack, so now thinking ipod docking station, although I'm going to test this out first with some pc speakers..

How about an Electro Harmonix Caliber 22 pedal? You plug it into an external speaker cab and you have a guitar combo. Theyre about £70, are pedal sized and sound pretty cool.

I hear that heading on down to the Crossroads and selling your soul might improve your playing. Cant vouch for it personally though.

Its the concentration span that matters to me, rather than age. If he's interested, can concentrate for 10 minutes or more and can physically hold the guitar, no harm in starting. I wish I had  default/big_smile

I think three might be a bit too young but maybe four or five? What do you guys think?

Hi there.  Felt a strong urge recently to learn gutiar and how to sing along.  I love music (some faves, Leonard Cohen, Niel Young, Cure, Smiths, Nick Cave, old Smashing Pumpkins, The stones etc) and just really feel I'd love to sit before or with a few people and play some good acoustic songs well one day.  I'd love to be able to play some of my fave songs from Leonard Cohen's first album.

I learned 11 years ago at college but my ego wasn't patient enough to master the basics and foundation as I wanted to be off playing my favorite songs etc, which of course I never was able to do as I had crappy techniques and never got them down!

This time around I'm goig slow, learning from the absolute bottom up and doing it thoroughly, not moving on from any one stage until I have it down good and clean.  Am using the 'Learn and Master Guitar' programe which seems to be a completely solid resource, as well as Justinguitar.com's beginner's course.  I even want to learn how to learn notes by ear rather than relying on an electric tuner.  Same with cords, I'll play them again and again until I can commit to meory exactly how they sound.  I will follow the course to the t, learn music theory, tab, how to recognise by ear, the whole shebang.

Already, 2 days in, those two resources have got me thinking abut posture, how I'm handling the guitar and trying to get each string of each chord to ring true and clear and not moving on from each one until I have buit up the finger strength and technique to do that.

Been doing finger and strumming exercises yesterday and today and some open chords.

A, E, G are fine, can get them good and clean. in minor and 7th too.  C and D are hard though to get really clean.  Hard.

D I find just hard to get the bottom E string to ring clearly and with no buzziness, very hard for some reason for me that bottom string, 2nd fret.  Hurts like heck and seems no matter how hard I press it any distance from the fret; it still buzzes!  I'll get it though.

C I find hard because of the distance your fingers have to stretch on the fretboard.  I can finger it okay, but when fingers are spread out like that, hard to put a lot of pressure.  Also my 2nd finger touches the string below it muting it slightly.

Still, only 2 days, so to be expected for at least the 1st few months.

Am enjoying though.

Also practiced 'anchoring' with 1st finger.  Changing from A, D, E using the first finger as the anchor.  Yeah, makes it so much easier than lifting your fingers up and then pressing the next chord.  Just lift up 2 and 3 and slide 1 over and replace 2 and 3 on the new chord.

Anyway I'm sure this is all very boring, so I'll shut up.

Will practice at least an hour every morning mon - fri (I work 1.30pm - 9pm) and several hour long sessions with breaks between at weekends as I'm trying to save money and quit gambling, so I'll do this instead of going to Seoul every weekend (I live in South Korea.)

Am liking this.  Nice to have someting my mind is focused on, and to persevere with.  Feels good.  My mantra of sorts at the moment is 'I have to adapt myself to the guitar, it doesn't work the other way round, you don't just pick it up and it works for you immediately.  You have to get used to using your hands etc in new ways.'

When I feel I can play the caged chords true and clean, and can transition between them with controll, smoothness as well as speed, I'll find a four chord song to try and get down.

Untli then, building up that finger strength....

My students tend to start weekly and move to fortnightly (maybe they are trying to tell me something LOL). I agree about the practicing things badly comment but I think it comes down to economics (Im not in a wealthy area) and commitment to practice. Some feel maybe that they dont get to practice enough to improve sufficiently over a week, and who am I to comment really.

The really annoying ones are those who book and dont turn up  default/sad

Its our duty and destiny as guitar players to be hated by neighbours Im afraid. Ive left lots of them in my wake.  default/big_smile

On a boring technical note, what did you use to do the video? Im looking for something reasonably cheap to do YouTube stuff with decent audio.

Will check it out, thanks. Im always on the lookout for good new guitar technique learning material.

Gotcha. Ive seen various DVDs that show how to economy pick as youve described. Ive got to admit that there is no way on earth my brain is going to cope with computations like that, mid-lead break.

I can just about do alternate picking and think that its essential if you want to get anywhere with the guitar.

Re. the question of the pinkie, its use it or lose it really.  default/smile  Its an eternal struggle to get it strong but hours of trills, stretches, 1-2-3-4 type exercises will pay off eventually.

Ive got a Schecter C-7 Blackjack with Blackout pickups. Its Korean but the quality and playability is superb. Ibanez are cool too but the quality seems to vary highly across the range top to bottom.

I think its like any guitar technique and is great when used with taste and timing. I do spend a lot of time trying to play the guitar faster because it helps me play slow as well (if that makes sense). I just see it as something to aim for to make my playing more interesting.

Neither. Go for the Vox VT40+. Much better guitar amp IMHO with good quality effects and great basic tones. Around £169 and a properly loud combo.

Might just need a decent guitar setup to help it stay in tune. Or maybe a new tuneomatic saddle, good quality nut or some decent tuners. What about the strings: good quality, new, stretched in?

Im probably getting old (42) but they all seem to be aimed at young players now. The presentation of mags like Total Guitar look more like Smash Hits to me and are a total turn-off and Guitarist is just plain dull. Ive tended to go for the USA mags instead including Guitar One (now gone sadly) and Guitar World but even that venerable magazine is pretty poor these days. Its all slavering over the studded jock-strap of some 17 year old metal player, who is then replaced in their affections 2 months later by someone similar. Their inclusion of half-naked women wrapped around guitar amps is just plain embarressing too.

Guitar Buyer has a bit of integrity in line with its lower readership and also seems to be honest in gear appraisal.

Either good or bad. Is the USA resting on its laurels? Is China overtaking Korea for quality? Does England produce any decent guitars?
