its probably had a new tone pot at some time and been replaced with
a ' detent ' type pot...this 'stop' is to let the user know that the pot is halfway round
its travel..they're usually used in pan and eq pots on mixers ..as long as its operating
as you'd expect it ( sound wise ) theres no need to fit a new one although is is not normal for a tone pot on a strat

When I say saddle I mean the bit the saddle sits in
whats the 'bit'

Re: left handed bridge (6 replies, posted in Guitars)
do you mean the whole bridge assembly ( which is major surgery )
or the plastic saddle ?
re saddle: if its compensated you will need a left handed one ( readily available )
if its not compensated ..just turn it the right way round ( if theres slots in it )
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LEFT-HAND-Com … 35c0afe910 ( just an example )
make sure of the sizes ( thickness etc )
it might be an investment to buy a tuner ..then ' over tightening ' wont be an issue
+ try a lighter gauge .. some guitar builds dont like ' piano strings '

Re: Is this the Pentatonic scale? (7 replies, posted in Announcements)
the point is..whatever you play on guitar can be played on bass and visa versa
with the limitations caused by number of strings and fret spacing ( physical )
bass is 1 octave lower than guitar + you probably wouldn't shred on a bass
or play flight of the bumble bee at 1500 bpm ( so thank god for that then )
you will find that most half decent git players can do a pretty good job on bass as well
but a dedicated bass player is something else.so keep practicing

hi and welcome to the forum
there's shed loads of suitable gear available...is there any reason why
you cant get your husband involved in selecting an amp since he appears
to be a practising musician?
i think a good starting point would be a 50watt 1 or 2 speaker combo...
but for less than £200 you might be looking at s/hand
google for trusted names...VOX/MARSHALL/ORANGE/PEAVEY/LINE6 ETC
local music shops might be worth a visit ..but take someone who knows
a little bit about what your after
no doubt some useful suggestions will be forthcoming
whether you get sorted this weekend though might be a tight call

Re: Is this the Pentatonic scale? (7 replies, posted in Announcements)
as far as fretting goes..the bass is exactly the same as guitar only an octave lower
and the top E and B missing ..the strings on a bass are E A D G on a guitar
you've got E A D G ( B E )
if you learnt a bass run then played it on guitar ..it would be the same
only an octave higher
try playing the E chord on your bass
scales are the same for all instruments ..you can play pentatonic scales on a
flute if you get pissed enough
a pentatonic scale is just a scale with 5 notes instead of the usual 7 ( heptatonic )

Re: make it your own (9 replies, posted in Song Analysis)
yeh i think its the first version you hear that you latch onto thats
going to be your favourite no matter what the history of the song is
what would you say the best version of ' something in the way she moves ' is
harrison's demo is amazing...one git that sounds more like a banjo
shirly bassie shines through as well..one a demo..the other a full blown
production..there you go ..you cant beat a bloody good tune

Re: make it your own (9 replies, posted in Song Analysis)
whether a song is ' better ' is very subjective...its still a cover
and in cockers case its a completely different version to the beatles
ringo was never a singer to start with ..but it will always be the classic version
because its the original
you can always rely on cocker to ' do his own thing ' though on any cover he does
plus his own stuff will never be 'topped' no matter who covers him
for me ..the original can never be topped ( even if played by better musicians/singers )IMO
the only exception would be perhaps..if the cover was taken from a LP
and was never aired much in the first place by the original artist

Re: Is this the Pentatonic scale? (7 replies, posted in Announcements)
this is from another thread
if you dont use any open strings all things are relative...so if you play
a lick in the key of A at the 7th fret ..then play it in the key of G
..play it at the 5th fret ( since G is 2 frets lower than A ..or a tone or 2 semitones )
if you play it in A# then the 8th fret is the starting point and so on ( for the same sequence of notes played in an identical manner and starting on the same string )
if you play the open C chord at the first position ( using an open E and G )
then move your fingers up 1 fret...everything goes pear shaped because everything
has gone up a semitone except E/G )so if you learn a lick in A ..dont use any open
strings..then you can play it in C by just playing everything 3 frets higher
google for the CAGED system of chords for similar principles involving chords
thus leading to barre chords ( no open strings )
some songs are very key specific
eg BLACKBIRD by the beatles can only be played ( as the record )
in the key of G because the G open string contributes to a lot of the overall
sound..learn a bit of it then try to play it in another key ( without using a capo )
if you can please post a clip

just wondering what you expect to get out of a 20w bass amp
that you cant already get out of your marshall considering the usage it might
get at this moment in time...personally i would put the £40 towards a serious bass setup
ready for when you start gigging....having said that it might be a nice little amp
to have lying around but maplin of late.. in my experience are quids dearer than most
of its competitors for similar quality items

Re: Bass amps and blowing mine up (5 replies, posted in Amplifiers)
but he cranked it up
you can play a bass through any amp as long as you play
within the spec of the speaker ( pwr handling/freq response )
cranking a bass ( or guitar/flute/triangle/mouth organ ..you name it) beyond the tolerance of any speaker is asking for the inevitable
...a speaker with no cone in it...or at best a damaged suspension so it rattles and farts
to f**k rendering it useless
275 17-03-13 11:39:31
Re: Bass amps and blowing mine up (5 replies, posted in Amplifiers)
keep the volume down...if the speakers start waffling turn it down some more (either the bass eq or the
vol )
just use your common sense with any amplifier
an amp designed for bass would be required for gigging though
because of the low frequencies and power levels required
