if you're not into DIY then you need it done by a tech....to modify the string heights you need the
appropriate files ...so again its a job for a git tech...its not difficult you just need the proper tools
and a bit of care

Re: What is causing this? (10 replies, posted in Guitars)
ideally every guitar should have a zero fret..but they have'nt..so as alun says..check
the relief in the neck ( curvature )then make sure the height of the break point from the nut over
the first fret is about as high as the clearance over the second fret when stopping the first string.
( usually the prob is the strings too high when leaving the nut ) hope this makes sense
...and to go harping on check out the earvana system..esp with light strings

as olly says...labour..pain...joy
then after the kids...........
I do try to practice with it.
keep it up...grit your teeth......in a few weeks time you will be pinky perfect
and never look back
prove to the newbees its the only way to play whatever your inspirations
your little finger is much bigger than you realise???????
(it can make your left hand 2" longer for starters)

OK but I am self tought and use my pinky,,,not much and if Idon't have to I won't
what does 'if i dont have to' mean??
is it deformed/broken/an embarrassment/ a funny colour/ or what????
your pinky is part of the team....dont be so cruel...get it involved..you know it makes sense
and you'll never regret it...if you can play fantastic without it...the you'd be a f***
megaunbelievable using it

Re: technique (25 replies, posted in Guitars)
simple exercise..put your first finger at the 5th position on the E string ( A )..then play
A C B A# continuously as fast as you can without your pinky..then with your pinky ( keep your first finger on the 5th fret )
then do the same again but playing C# instead of C

Re: hendrix (4 replies, posted in Guitars)
it always seemed to me that he was approximately in tune but not particularly around
standard pitch...in those days there were no tuners like we have now
it was..pitch pipes/tuning fork..or get a note off the keyboard player if he wasnt too pissed
hendrix's whole sound was based on bending and vibrato..so really light gauge strings
were a must..not the easiest setup for keeping in tune..esp if your're high as a kite

sorry .... i meant... say ..playing a strat thro a marshal..or a SG thro a vox...or a hofner
thro a selmer or a burns thro an orange ...or a martin thro a peavey etc etc etc or any
permutation of anything playing through anything...but to make it more difficult
inserting your favourite effects pedal(s)
ie if i posted a clip of a guitar ( piece of music ) would you be able to identify
the git / amp / effect ( model )...a very brave man would say yes..urmmm???

Re: technique (25 replies, posted in Guitars)
in my opinion there is a ' properly '...there is always a proper way to do anything
any guitarist thats had lessons from a quality teacher with always use his pinky
especially if its from the word go..most self taught guitarist dont use their pinky
cause its ten times easier using their 3rd..so the bad habit develops
...you wont type 500 words a minute on a typewriter using 2 fingers ( old adage )

Re: earvana (5 replies, posted in Guitars)
all my gits have got earvana nuts ( custom built from pics )they definately
makes a difference to the tuning especially if you use a plain ' G '..i find the most
annoying chord is ' F ' at the first position..where the G string stands out like a sore
thumb ( unless its flattened slightly ) . The earvana system cures this..
having the break point to high can also cause tuning problems at the lower end
of the fret board
