so what have you bought and how much have they cost?
dont forget speakers can be either (P)assive or (A)ctive...
the behringer b2031 comes as " P " or " A " ???...Make sure they are the B2031A
else you will have to buy a discrete stereo amp

having read the reviews ..i wouldn't bother...4" woofer?? 25 watts ?

go for an 8" woofer ( behringer 2031a for eg )...i bought a pair for 179pound B Stock
sound as good as my mackie 824's and i've had them now for 5 years no prob

what you're looking for is flat response +/- 3 db down to at least 50hz
there are hundreds to choose from ..i can only comment on behringer and mackie

if you get less than an 8" woofer though.. you will be lacking at the bottom end ( bass )

but check the specs before you decide...and go to the local music store to try them out

there are also loads of bargains on ebay

why ditch your hi fi.........its always useful to listen to your finished mixes on
most studios have multiple sets of speakers anyway

but it is nice to know what you're hearing is what it is (on flat monitors )

but....... if you want to have a few beers and chill out .. turn the bass up etc on your studio
monitors ( via external EQ )..but dont forget always return them to flat response for recording
and mixing

sorry wrong link
try this for starters
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=b … m270.l1313

ps

if you record a really disgusting dirty sound miking an amp
then it will sound exactly the same through good flat monitors ( almost..
depending on how the cab is miked up..but thats another subject )

what you need for a recording setup is flat response studio monitors
so you get a true representation of the full audio spectrum in your mixes

ie if your speakers are bass light then all your mixes will be bass heavy
on a flat system because you will be adding bottom end to compensate for your
speakers non linear response

there are loads of budget price nearfield monitors available that can do the job
and there are some great bargains to be had

but if you've got any spare cash after xmas try these

thanks for the compliments...much appreciated
i think with playing in bands for over a 100 years the count in was the first most important part of the song
it dictated  the tempo....so the speed of the count in was the speed of the song
if the drummer counted in to fast the song would be to fast and visa versa

so viva good drummers ( and drum machines etc )......if say your song in cubase starts at bar 7
put 4 bass drum hits ( or snare ) starting at bar 6...ie 1..2..3..4 on the quarter beat ...this will give you the feel
of the song ( basically )....before the drums kick in

a pro drummer will usually tap his sticks and do a verbal count at the song tempo

count ins can vary but they will always give the tempo of the song

582

(23 replies, posted in Music Theory)

just remember.....when you count a song in...... 1..2..3..4       thats the tempo ( the speed at which
you say 1..2..3..4 )  if the bpm is 60 then    theres 1 sec between each count

583

(23 replies, posted in Music Theory)

if you classed each note of the hihat as a crotchet how would you define gaps of say ..a slow bass line
its all a convention at the end of the day...+youd finish up with tempos in the several hundred bpm??

584

(23 replies, posted in Music Theory)

that would be 16/16 =308bpm  if you change it to crotchets it becomes 77bpm....there are still
16 hihats but the time sig would be 4/4....4 crotchets in every bar

so if you set the tempo to 308 ( but each beat being a semi quav ) you would have 308 semi quav bpm
but still only 77 crotchet bpm....so the speed would still be the same but 4 times the resolution??

so the actual named tempo depends on the time sig..if its 16/16 it would be 308bpm
                                                                                     if its  4/4          "           77bpm

for an identical piece of music the ' speed ' would be the same

the 'n ' is just any number of  measures per bar   ie 2/4  3/4  4/4  n/4  etc

like a waltz is 123..123  123

585

(23 replies, posted in Music Theory)

if the time signature was n/8 then it would be 154bpm...were assuming
the time signature is n/4 ie4/4

Simple time signatures consist of two numerals, one stacked above the other:
the lower numeral indicates the note value which represents one beat (the "beat unit");
the upper numeral indicates how many such beats there are in a bar.
For instance, 2/4 means two quarter-note (crotchet) beats; 3/8 means three eighth-note (quaver) beats.
The most common simple time signatures are 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4

586

(23 replies, posted in Music Theory)

if there are 16 hihat hits  that means there are 4 to every beat in the bar ( 1/4 )
if there was 20 then it would be 5 for every 1/4 bar...the tempo will still be 77bpm
( assuming the time signature is 4/4 )...i would google this... i bet there is a much better
way of explaining it than i am doing

587

(23 replies, posted in Music Theory)

the tempo is bpm.. beats per minute
so with the track you posted just count the bass drum and snare in sequence
ie bd =1 sn =2 bd =3 sn =4    =77bpm

the count in can be a variety of things  ie  1..2..1234..................1&2&3&4    etc
but the tempo should always be 77 (bpm)

you could use a tempo of 154 but then all the notes would be half the duration
i find it always better to use a tempo that 's even ..in this case 78 or 76 then its easier to ' halve '
if you have to

usually whatever speed you're tapping your foot to is the tempo ( usually )
so if you tap your foot to your drums your tapping @ 77bmp

http://www.metronomeonline.com/

in rock/pop music the bass drum is nearly always on the 1st /3rd beat and the snare on the 2nd /4th beat
in dance the bass drum is nearly always on the 1st/2nd/3rd/4th  and f*** the snare

Yes this is EZ Drummer. And 77bpm is exactly what I had it set to.

There is a couple of things that confused me about this.

Firstly I am unsure what to count as the main beat - to me, if I were tapping the tempo I would be tapping the high hat beat, the bass drum falling on beat one and the snare on beat three. However this would make the tempo 154bpm.

I was trying to find the tempo of a song that had a similar drum beat to this, so I aligned it all up and came up with cubase saying 77bpm however looking online, most of this bands tempos are >120 bpm and picking another couple of their tracks, I find the same issue with cubase reporting them at 1/2 the speed suggested.

So I got very confused and I still am!

How did you find the bpm?

77bpm precisely    btw nice sounding drum kit is it ez?

set cubase to a fixed tempo of 77 then align the first bass drum hit to start at the first beat of the bar
say 5:1:1:0 then from then on everythig can be cut and paste ( if necessary ) with no timing issues

cubase will only remember ( record/save ) controllers etc ie note on/off..velocities.midi channels..
it does not know how you setup your digital piano

if you use native instruments ( vsti )this problem does not occur as everything is within the
computer

assuming you recorded 3 midi tracks
ch1 for piano
ch2 for choir
ch3 for drums

then you must setup your piano so midi channel 1 has the piano assigned to it
midi channel 2 has the choir assigned to it
and   midi channel 3 has drums assigned to it

you can usually save and send patch changes to your keyboard....but all keyboards are slightly different
so check your documentation.it seems you're sending all your midi to 1 channel which has a piano
assigned to it.........or midi ch 1/2/3 have a piano assigned to them

a good rule of thumb is when you like a particular part you've written on midi.. say a piano part
record the audioonto an audio track in cubase ...this way you will always have that sound
regardless of what happens to your keyboard...still keep the midi though in case you want to edit it at
a later date ( notes/sound etc )

a good starting point is... after deciding a tempo record a basic drum track..so you dont have to use
the onboard metronome ( except for count in )

render it to audio ( you only have to record say 4 bars ) then copy and paste the length of the song

if you know the chords of a song does it matter what key its in ..... and if i wrote a song
with 3 chords say A D and E who says its in A if im the author why cant i say its in the key of D
...its my song so thats the key ...if you want to do it in C then the chords are G C and D and it wont make the slightest  bit of difference...or will it ????????????

it seems the only significance to what key it is.. is when its written to sheet music
so the musician can play the correct notes ( looking at the stave and knowing which are sharps and flats

and in our world i think sheet music is bottom of the list

a rule of thumb is ..the first chord of the verse is the " key " its in ( 99% )

cubase 6 has got something similar to melodyne but i am well happy with sx3  and the melodyne

this can be a case of extreme pitch correction...most of the good pitching programs will do this
just take the vibrato out of the voice and quantise it to perfect notes...so if you look at the waveform on say melodyne...its dead flat...whether this is done on autotune its anybodies guess ..there is probably
loads of other processing as well ( chorus/adt etc )

didnt know geremy could sing...i just thought he was a self righteous condescending patronising

yes ... in  Bolivia....and take his cat ..whatever its name is with him

"The Asylum and Immigration Tribunal ruled that sending the Bolivian man back to his homeland would breach his human rights because he was entitled to a "private and family life", and joint ownership of a pet was evidence that he was fully settled in this country.
Lawyers for the Home Secretary were aghast at the decision by James Devittie, an immigration judge, to allow the immigrant to stay in Britain. They lodged an appeal, but their case was again rejected.
The Bolivian's identity has not been disclosed and even the name of the pet cat was blanked out in official court papers to protect its privacy." ( DAILY telegraph )
