I think for what you get on some pedals, it comes out to be a true bargin. But although I haven't seen /used one of any  custom made stomp boxes, they do seem to be a bit over priced for what you get.

I think the small amps with low wattage are being advertised more these days. And they have really come along way from sounding tinny. I have no desire to own an amp over 30 watts these days but it would be nice to find one with 2  12's in it just to have a bit a fun (that is when the wife isn't around)

I'm more of a maple neck for electrics. I would even like a maple neck on a Les Paul.  But for acoustic , it's a rosewood.

the song is put together.
4. Try playing the melody from memory, slowly at first.
5. Then play the melody along with the recording. Copy inflections, articulations, slurs, phras-
ing, dynamics, etc.
6. Learn the scales and chords in the order as they appear in the song. Make sure you've got
the right changes (chord progression). Get them from a reliable source, such as the play-
a-long books.
7. Improvise over the harmony, keeping in mind the original melody as a frame of reference.
8. Emphasize the thirds and sevenths of scales in your soloing.
9. Memorize both melody and chord/scales if you haven't already. Know where the chord
tones are ON YOUR INSTRUMENT.
10. Improvise your original melodies based on what your mind HEARS. Let your mind guide
your choice of notes, phrasing, rhythms, articulations, etc...
11. Listen constantly to the original recording of the song to further stir your imagination. In-
corporate ideas of the recording into your solos.
12. Learn the lyrics if the song has any. Mentally sing the lyrics while playing the melody.
13. Fall in love with the melodies to songs. Play them like YOU wrote them.

I liked all what you said, but #13 hit home with me

As I pick up the guitar and decide to write lyrics for a new song, my thoughts need to connect with something that is in me. I call it "the lyrics need to have  a home in your heart". You see when I do this the words can now easily connect with a picture of my thoughts that my mind/emotions are to express myself with.

I guess in a way I am because I like to use the larger size picks. The standard size picks I don't even look at them any more.  I do like the medium thick grade picks though

- never played with it myself though. Digitech is a good trusted brand so I would expect it to perform well. Especially for the cost!

thanks olly

I just noticed this post

are they a pretty good seller in the UK

My amp is basic so I thought I'd ask that question.  I know these days you can buy some low end amps with a lot of toys on them so why not buy it.

I kind of like a simple amp and buy a few pedal to suite my playing

Do any of you have these on your guitar?

I have the red and blue on my Telecaster and I really like them. I think they do lack a bit of punce when you want the note to last a long time, but other than that they have a nice tone.

Well, back from Tokyo. 2 days in Tokyo was not enough, did take a few pictures, but none of guitar stores. We went to Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Harajuku, (something like that). We had an enjoyable time.  So many people, but for me I like the country life style where I live. Although I did ask the wife if would like to buy a house an hour our out  of Tokyo area and she said "are you kidding". No!  So now it is back to the Japanese countryside!

Perhaps you're more of a lead guitarist than a rhythm guitarist. It took me years to accept that I was naturally a rhythm guitarist; I struggled against this because I wanted to play sexy cool solos but just couldn't, then I realised that being able to keep rhythm was a skill that few lead guitarists had - neither one is better than the other but very few musicians are skilled at both.

mikey

I do find myself always playing lead unless I'm writing a song

Are you saying that you struggle to tap your foot to the beat when there is no backing?

yes, I think that is right

before, even if I listened to drums as the main beat my foot and brain didn't jive, but little by little it is improving. Without some kind of rhythm  beat going though it is difficult for me to keep in rhythm

Ok, I got to say, this has been a major problem.  It seems like I want to feel the rhythm in my head and match it with the tapping of the foot.  I feel maybe most of the time  that with out any backing tracks or drum beat  I  feel that I  am pushing myself and it doesn't feel natural .
Do any of you have this problem too

Ok, you bought a Chinese / Vietnamese  amp and the speaker is not so hot. You change the speaker to a very good speaker.  Do you think this is better to do than maybe buy a more expensive amp with a so so speaker.  I did this with a Parker amp and tone really delivered with a Celestion speaker in it.

So I don't think it is a bad idea

Do you play the electric more than the acoustic?

I'd say I mostly pick up my electric nearly all the time, but I do like to bring the acoustic outside and strum a bit during the sunset

Looks like a geat site- I wish I had broadband to use it. I hear you have some of the fastest and cheapest broadband available there in Japan. In rural areas here the only option in most cases is sat broadband, which I had for a while, but which is totaly useless- and quite expensive if you want to use it to download even a small amount.

We pay about 65 dollars a month for telephone and broadband. It's an all you can use service for one set fee which I think is about 45 dollars and the tel. bill is like 20 dollars a month.  Is that about what you pay there

Well, we'll be leaving in the morning. Haven't been there since the 70's. Time sure does fly fast. Hope to check out the guitar shops too! Hope to have some crazy pictures of downtown Tokyo to show you all.
