They reckon Douglas Barder was an World War 2 spitfire ace because he had no legs. Therefore when he put the aeroplane in a high speed bank he did not black out. Meaning he stayed in control of the aeroplane which enabled him to get behind the Germans faster.
The blood, which in a normal full bodied spitfire pilot doing the same manoeuvre would rush to there legs causing a black out. This meant that they lost control of the plane for a few seconds which enabled the Germans to get out of the way as the German fighters where no match for the manoeuvrability of the spitfire.
Of course our man Douglas had no legs so the blood had no where to go meaning he stayed awake.
