Best Methods For Practicing Piano Pieces

I am interested in hearing other people's reccomendations for the most efficient way to practice a piece of music.

My teacher always advocated playing a piece hands speperately then hands together. Hands seperately I always find so boring that it kind of puts me off.

Then there is how much of a piece to practice. Like one or two bars or a whole page or the entire piece.
