Transitioning from Sheet Music to Playing by Ear

Post by GearNerd »

I'm at a point in my musical journey where I want to be able to sit down and play without sheet music in front of me. I've been playing for about two years and have weekly lessons, but I'm looking for advice on how to transition to playing by ear. What's the secret formula?

As a blues player, I can tell you that a lot of playing by ear comes from listening to the music you love. Try to pick out the different elements of a song - the chords, the solos, the rhythms - and practice playing along with them. It's all about developing your ear and your sense of musicality.

I come from a metal background, and playing by ear is essential in this genre. I recommend learning scales and modes to help you improvise and play by ear. Practice jamming along to backing tracks and try to pick out the different elements of the music.

I'm a newbie too, and I struggle with playing by ear. One thing that has helped me is focusing on learning songs by ear instead of relying on sheet music. It's challenging at first, but it gets easier with practice.

As a studio musician, I can tell you that playing by ear is a valuable skill to have. One tip is to start by learning simple melodies and then gradually work your way up to more complex pieces. It takes time and dedication, but it's definitely worth it in the end.

I'm a guitar tech, and I can tell you that playing by ear is a combination of practice, ear training, and musical knowledge. Try to incorporate different styles of music into your practice routine and challenge yourself to play by ear. It's a great way to improve your overall musicianship.
