Understanding Chord Progressions – Why Certain Chords Sound Good Together

Many beginners wonder why some chord progressions sound great while others don’t.

A lot of this comes down to keys and harmonic relationships.

For example, in the key of C major, common chords include:

C

F

G

Am

Progressions like:

C – G – Am – F
are popular because they create tension and resolution in a pleasing way.

When learning chord progressions:

Try listening for how chords resolve

Notice how songs repeat patterns

Experiment with simple 3 or 4 chord progressions

What chord progressions do you find yourself using most often?

Even simple two-chord progressions can sound great if the rhythm and dynamics are interesting.

I find myself using I–V–vi–IV quite a lot. It works in so many styles.
