If you're starting to learn music theory on guitar, scales can feel confusing at first. The good news is that most music is built from just a few essential scales.

Here are the three scales most guitarists learn first:

1. Major Scale

The foundation of Western music theory

Used to build chords and understand keys

Often sounds bright or happy

2. Minor Scale

Used in many rock, blues and metal styles

Often sounds darker or more emotional

3. Minor Pentatonic Scale

One of the most useful scales for guitarists

Used in blues, rock, country and many other styles

Easy to learn and apply to improvisation

If you're learning scales, focus on:

Learning the notes slowly

Understanding how scales relate to chords

Practising with backing tracks

What scales helped you the most when you were learning?

Learning the major scale patterns helped me understand the fretboard much better, even though I didn’t use it for solos right away.
