How to start learning music theory

I am really interested in learning about music theory as I think it would help me with composing and breaking away from boring chord progressions.

However, it seems like such a minefield and I have no idea where to even begin to get started.

Can anyone offer any advice on where I should or could begin without getting overloaded?
