I've been studying music theory for a while now but I can't seem to write a full song. Any advice on how to level up my songwriting skills?

“I woke up this morning,
And”.

That’s as far as I got.

Writing a good song is easy, you just have to write 10,000 bad songs first. Keep at it and don't get discouraged!

Sometimes when I'm stuck, I pick a current favorite song and use it as a blueprint to create my own version. It helps get the creative juices flowing.

Every Green Day or Foo Fighters song started as a simple acoustic tune. Try starting with a basic chord progression and build from there.

Great songs come from deep emotions and life experiences. Don't be afraid to tap into your feelings when writing music.

Sounds about as far as I usually get!

I think the generaly consensus is just write. Don't try to write a hit - just write anything. And keep doing it. Try and finish it wherever possible even though it might not be ideal. And you can then filter the bad from the good and gain an ear for what works. As with anything, practice makes perfect.

This is far easier said than done though. I am yet to do it myself even though it is a long term goal of mine...

I find that starting with a catchy title can help spark inspiration for a song. Try coming up with a two-word title and build from there.

Great tips.
I feel I’ve got it now. Very excited.
I’m going to write a song about my experiences.
I’m going to call it “Writer’s Block Blues”.

Goes like this….

“Well I woke up this morning…
And I’ve got writer’s block.”

That’s as far as I got, but it’s looking better already!
