Is 10 months a reasonable amount of time to get good at the guitar?
Piano player of 18 years here. Was wondering if 10 months was a reasonable timeframe to get good at this instrument? Improvisation, chords, scales, the whole lot. I’ve got a solid grasp on theory. And I’m killer on the keys. Just wanted to ask a few vetted guitar players to see if this timeline is delusional or not.

Physical conditioning is key. If you’re looking to get that amp-saturated sound, you’ll want to build finger strength. It can take longer than you think to really connect with your gear and get that tone.

While your theory knowledge is a plus, guitar requires unique physical skills. Barre chords alone can take months of practice. Also, consider the genre you want to play; fingerstyle will demand even more time to develop the necessary techniques.

Ten months is nothing in the metal world! You might nail some basic stuff, but to play complex riffs and solos with precision? You'll need to crank up that practice time significantly if you want to shred.

Guitar is all about feel. Ten months can get you some decent chops, but truly capturing tone takes years. Focus on expressing yourself rather than just hitting the right notes; that’s how you really ‘get good’.

Look, ten months is a solid timeframe. Just be patient with yourself. Guitar has a learning curve, and it's all about consistent practice. You’ll get there, just don’t expect to be a pro overnight.
