If I have a tie into a key change, does the note stay the same despite the key change? For example here, I have an Eb with a tie into a new bar that has a key change. Does the note stay an Eb despite the key change or does it go from Eb to E natural? Thank you

I was always taught that a tie will carry over the same note within a new bar and threfore any instances of that note within the new bar will also carry the sharp or flat unless it is notated with a natural sign.

So in your example I would say the new note would also be Eb and any other E within that same bar would also be Eb unless it was marked otherwise.

In practical terms, yes, it stays the same. Ties are meant to connect notes regardless of key changes. Just pay attention to how it sounds in context, and you'll be fine.

In classical notation, tied notes should remain the same pitch. However, you typically need a courtesy accidental to clarify the note's value after the key change. Always check your score for these annotations!
