Ear Training for Guitar

Just started learning and just started watching Absolutely Understand Guitar. In the second video, Scotty talks about how important ear training is. What are the valid options here? I might be able to find someone to teach this in person if warranted - my guitar tutor that I'm seeing for my 30-minute weekly lesson today might know someone. Are there apps or anything else that can cover this?

For beginners, I recommend starting with the major scale and vocalising the notes. Try singing the root, third, and fifth of the scale while playing along. It builds a strong foundation for understanding music theory. Over time, you’ll begin to recognize patterns, and it’ll help you play songs by ear. Trust me, it’s worth the effort.

If you're into jamming, one effective way to train your ear is to play along with songs on the radio. Start by identifying the root notes and chord progressions, then add in the licks and riffs. It’s a game-changer for developing relative pitch. Don’t be discouraged if it takes time; it took me years to get to where I could easily jam without needing to know the chords upfront. Just keep at it, and you'll get there!

At the end of the day, ear training is a journey. Start simple and don’t rush it. You don’t need to dive into advanced concepts right away. Focus on matching notes, and as you get comfortable, gradually introduce more complex elements. Your guitar lessons can be a great space to explore this, so use that time wisely.
